Three Men Get Life Sentences for Violent Phone and Shoe Theft

Three men have been handed life sentences by a court in Ngong after they were found guilty of committing violent robberies in separate incidents. The prosecution presented strong evidence that convinced the magistrate to give the harshest punishment allowed by law.

First Robbery in Kibiku

According to court documents, the three attacked a man on December 18, 2021, in Kibiku, Kajiado West. They violently stole:

  • A Huawei Y9 smartphone worth Ksh24,990
  • A memory card valued at Ksh3,995
  • A pair of shoes worth Ksh4,000

Investigators later discovered that the attackers also accessed the victim’s mobile money wallet and transferred Ksh3,970 to another phone line. The victim was assaulted during the robbery and left with injuries before the criminals fled.

The magistrate ruled that the prosecution had fully proven every element required in a robbery with violence case. The court noted that the attackers used force, were armed, and acted as a group—key components of the offence under Kenyan law. As a result, all three were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Part of the judgment stated:
“Before escaping, the attackers used violence against the complainant and left him injured. The prosecution proved the offence of robbery with violence beyond reasonable doubt, warranting a life sentence.”

Additional Charges

One of the convicts faced an extra charge for resisting arrest. This happened on December 29, 2021, in Bulbul, Kajiado North. For that offence, the court added another two-year prison term.

Second Violent Robbery

The court also established that one of the three men was linked to an earlier violent robbery that took place on September 5, 2021, in Oloolua, Kajiado North. In that incident, the suspect and his accomplices attacked another victim and stole property worth Ksh227,000. Items listed in the charge sheet included:

  • A smart TV valued at Ksh95,000
  • A Honda concrete vibrator worth Ksh36,000
  • Two mobile phones valued at Ksh44,000
  • Ksh50,000 in cash

The attackers also physically assaulted the victim, leaving him with injuries before making their escape.

For this second violent crime, the court issued an additional life sentence, stressing that repeat offenders involved in violent robberies pose a serious threat to public safety.

The magistrate noted that such crimes have been on the rise in recent years, especially with the emergence of organised criminal gangs across the country.

The ruling sends a strong message that violent robbery will not be tolerated and that those found guilty will face the maximum punishment provided by law.
