At least 13 people are feared dead after a horrific accident involving a 14-seater matatu and a trailer along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway on the morning of Sunday, September 28.

Photos seen by Newshub.co.ke show the matatu lying on its side at the edge of the road, while the trailer came to a stop a short distance ahead. The crash occurred in the Kariandusi area near Gilgil.

Although the exact cause of the accident has not been confirmed, early reports indicate that the two vehicles may have collided head-on. The front of the matatu was completely crushed, pointing to a severe impact.

The trailer appeared to have lost control before toppling into a roadside ditch, with part of its body still blocking the road. Debris and broken vehicle parts were scattered across the highway, painting a picture of the force of the collision.

Residents in the area rushed to the scene immediately to help survivors, offering first aid as best as they could before emergency teams arrived.

By Sunday afternoon, police and rescue teams were still working to remove the wreckage, causing heavy traffic that stretched from the Kikopey area as vehicles slowed down or waited to pass.

Comes Hours After Another Deadly Crash

Worryingly, this accident happened just hours after six people, including occupants of an ambulance, died a few kilometres away along the same highway.

On Saturday evening, a patient, her husband, two relatives, a nurse, and the ambulance driver all lost their lives in a crash near Kimende on the Nakuru–Nairobi stretch.

Witnesses said the ambulance, which belonged to St. Mary’s Mission Hospital in Elementaita, was speeding as it rushed a critically ill patient. The vehicle reportedly lost control and crashed, killing everyone on board instantly. The impact left the ambulance badly wrecked.

Another Crash Adds to Chaos

In a separate incident along the same busy road at Gilgil, another accident caused a major traffic snarl-up. Several vehicles, including a truck, were involved in the crash between Kikopey and St. Mary’s, though the number of casualties had not yet been confirmed.

Witnesses reported that some passengers were feared injured. The truck involved overturned and completely blocked the highway, halting movement in both directions. Motorists were forced to wait for police to arrive and help clear the obstruction and restore traffic flow.
