Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has issued a strong warning against corruption and malpractice ahead of the nationwide police recruitment exercise, set to begin on October 3.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 2, Kanja said that the National Police Service (NPS) has put in place strict selection guidelines to ensure only deserving and qualified candidates are recruited during the 7-day exercise.

Clear Requirements for Applicants

Kanja emphasized that only candidates who meet the required academic and physical qualifications will be shortlisted.

“Applicants must have the right education, pass all the required tests, and prove that they are physically and mentally fit for police work,” he stated.

He urged Kenyans not to pay anyone claiming to secure them a slot, warning that bribery attempts will lead to automatic disqualification and possible arrest.

Zero Tolerance for Fake Documents

Kanja also cautioned applicants against submitting forged certificates or fake medical or ID documents, saying such actions will result in instant rejection and prosecution.

Warning to Officers and Middlemen

The IG issued an equally stern warning to officers involved in the recruitment exercise, urging them to maintain professionalism and integrity.

“Any officer caught engaging in corrupt activities will face serious disciplinary action, including dismissal and criminal charges,” he warned.

He revealed that oversight and monitoring teams will conduct surprise inspections at recruitment centres to ensure transparency.

Public Urged to Report Corruption

Kanja encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious activity or bribery attempts during the process so that investigations can be conducted immediately.

Recruitment to Cover 416 Centres, Targeting 10,000 Recruits

The recruitment exercise, which runs from October 3 to October 9, aims to hire approximately 10,000 new police constables. It will take place in 416 locations across Kenya.

To qualify, an applicant must:

  • Be a Kenyan citizen
  • Be between 18 and 28 years old
  • Have at least a KCSE grade of D- (minus)
