Police in Homa Bay County have opened an investigation into a strange incident in which a 38-year-old man died after being attacked by bees.
The deceased, Bernard Omollo, is said to have been stung on October 1, 2025, at a neighbour’s farm in Atonik Village, Rachuonyo South Sub-County. Officers from the Oyugis Police Station confirmed the incident in an OB report filed on Thursday, October 2.
According to the report, Omollo allegedly provoked the bees, which led to the attack. Authorities further disclosed that he had a history of mental illness.
“It was reported by Kadel Kamigigo Sub-Location Assistant Chief, Monica, that a male adult, identified as Bernard Omolo, aged 38 years and mentally ill, had been attacked by a swarm of bees at a neighbour’s farm,” part of the police statement read.
Police noted that the beehives belonged to Omollo’s mother, Margret Odie, who had jointly domesticated them with the neighbour. Unfortunately, the swarm overpowered Omollo, leaving him with severe stings and injuries, which led to his death shortly after.
The Officer Commanding Station (OCS), accompanied by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), visited the scene to assess the situation.
Omollo’s body was transported to Rachuonyo South Sub-County Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination.
Bee Attacks Can Be Fatal
Medical experts warn that bee stings can turn deadly, depending on the number of stings and a person’s health condition. While some people can withstand multiple stings, excessive venom increases the risk of a toxic reaction.
Even a single sting can be fatal, especially for individuals with allergies or underlying health conditions.
