Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, is mourning the passing of his father, Mzee Weston Kirocho Kanja, who died on Tuesday, October 14.

However, news about his death only became public nearly a week later, on Monday, October 20. The cause of Mzee Kanja’s death has not been revealed to the public.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shared the sad news through a post on social media, confirming the passing of Mzee Kanja. In the post, DCI Director Mohamed Amin was seen signing a condolence book at IG Kanja’s residence.

The message expressed deep sympathy and support for the police chief and his family during their difficult time.

“This evening, the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mr. Mohamed Amin, visited the Inspector General of the National Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja, MGH, CBS, OGW, to personally offer his condolences following the loss of his father, Mzee Weston Kirocho Kanja, on October 14, 2025,” read the statement from DCI.

The DCI further added, “The Director, together with the entire DCI family, conveys heartfelt condolences and stands in solidarity with IG Kanja and his family. We join them in mourning and extend our deepest sympathies as they go through this challenging period.”

According to family sources, Mzee Kanja will be laid to rest on Thursday, October 23, at the family’s ancestral home in Thome Village, Matanya Sub-Location, Tigithi Location, Laikipia County.

The late Mzee was blessed with several children, including Inspector General Douglas Kanja, Millicent Gathigia, Grace Mumbi, Alice Hiuko, Jane Wanjira, Naomi Wanjiru, Racheal Nyaguthii, Beatrice Wakiuru, Margaret Murugi, George Mathenge, Winfred Muthoni, and Charity Wamuyu.

He was married to two wives, Jedidah Wanjiku and Catherine Wanjiku. At the time of his passing, Mzee Kanja was 85 years old. He was the son of the late Kanja Irimu and the late Millicent Gathigia.

His siblings included the late Douglas Irimu, the late Major Wilson Munene, the late Cecelia Hiuko, the late Veronica Kang’ang’i, and the late Piety Beatrice Wakiuru.

Interestingly, Mzee Kanja’s death came just a day before another national tragedy—the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away after suffering cardiac arrest while receiving treatment in India.

Raila’s death overshadowed much of the national conversation due to his prominent political legacy. The former Prime Minister’s passing attracted both local and international attention, drawing tributes from leaders and citizens across the world.

IG Kanja was among the dignitaries who attended the viewing of Raila’s body at Parliament Buildings on Thursday, joining others in paying their last respects.

The former Prime Minister was laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, at his family home in Kang’o ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County. His burial was attended by national and regional leaders who described him as a true patriot and one of Kenya’s greatest statesmen.

The loss of Mzee Weston Kirocho Kanja has deeply touched the Inspector General and his extended family, with many leaders and friends continuing to send messages of comfort.

As the Kanja family prepares for the burial, Kenyans from all walks of life have expressed solidarity and shared warm tributes in remembrance of a man described as humble, loving, and dedicated to his family and community.
