Kenyan Government to Compensate Uganda Over Killing of Five Nationals, Says Museveni
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has called on the Kenyan government to compensate Uganda for the deaths of five Ugandan nationals — including soldiers and geologists — who were allegedly killed by Turkana warriors in 2022.
Speaking during a rally at Kalas Girls Primary School grounds on October 29, President Museveni said the matter could not be ignored and must be properly addressed to maintain peace and good relations between the two neighboring countries.
He stressed the importance of reconciliation and accountability, noting that Uganda values every citizen’s life and expects justice for those killed.
The President revealed that after Kenya’s elections, both governments will hold a joint event to officially settle the matter.
He announced that he is planning a compensation ceremony to be held in Moroto District, located in Uganda’s Northern Region, and that President William Ruto will be invited to attend.
“The Kenyan government will pay for the lives of those who were killed. After the elections, I will conduct a joint ceremony with President Ruto in Moroto so that Kenya can make the payment,” Museveni said.
“They will compensate for the lives of our people who died, and our elders will also conduct traditional cleansing rituals. Religious leaders such as bishops and sheikhs will be present to offer their blessings and prayers,” he added.
Museveni further explained that the compensation would take the form of financial payment to the families of the victims. He emphasized that justice must be served, and the affected families should receive full compensation for their loss.
“The Turkana still have an unpaid debt because they killed our people. I told President Ruto that if the individuals responsible cannot afford to pay, then the Kenyan government itself must take responsibility and compensate Uganda,” Museveni stated firmly.
Background of the 2022 Moroto Attack
The tragic incident occurred in March 2022, when a group of Turkana warriors reportedly ambushed and killed three geologists from Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, along with two Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers who were guarding them.
The team had been carrying out a mineral mapping mission in Moroto when they were suddenly attacked. According to reports, the armed assailants opened fire without warning and later made away with the two guns belonging to the UPDF officers.
All five victims — the geologists and their military escorts — were killed on the spot. The attack happened in a remote area near the Uganda-Kenya border, an area that has long been prone to cross-border conflicts and cattle raids between local communities.
Following the incident, tensions between residents of Uganda’s Karamoja region and Kenya’s Turkana County intensified, prompting both governments to discuss measures aimed at restoring peace and preventing further clashes.
Museveni’s latest statement reinforces Uganda’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and holding those responsible accountable, while also promoting unity and cooperation between the two East African nations.
