Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed deep admiration for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying that he is greatly inspired by Raila’s political journey and leadership style.
Gachagua noted that he is following in Raila’s political footsteps as he works to strengthen his own movement and challenge President William Ruto’s administration.
Speaking on Saturday, November 1, Gachagua described Raila as a political genius who consistently managed to rise again even after facing defeat.
He said Raila’s ability to reinvent himself and remain relevant in politics for decades was something few leaders could achieve.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader explained that he is currently rebuilding and reinforcing his party in hopes of reaching the same political influence that Raila once commanded.
Gachagua went on to recognize several leaders close to Raila — including Edwin Sifuna, Babu Owino, and James Orengo — for their loyalty and dedication in protecting Raila and his party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
He praised their unwavering support, saying they played a vital role in keeping Raila’s political vision alive.
Admitting that he has yet to reach Raila’s level of political experience and mastery, Gachagua said the former Prime Minister’s passing had left an enormous void in Kenya’s political space — one that would be very difficult to fill.
“As we mourn Raila Odinga, I must confess that I deeply admire two things about him. I’m truly inspired by the strong political party he built.
Just look at ODM; even though Raila was never elected as President, he always managed to stay close to government and remain influential,” Gachagua remarked.
He further applauded Raila’s inner circle of advisors and defenders, describing them as brilliant minds who stood by their leader through every challenge. “If you look at the people who surrounded Raila, they were top-class lawyers and thinkers.
These include James Orengo, the late Otieno Kajwang, Peter Kaluma, Edwin Sifuna, and Babu Owino, among others. They defended him tirelessly for over 30 years. That kind of loyalty and intellect is rare in politics,” he added.
Gachagua also revealed plans to strengthen his own political foundation by bringing together a team of 100 legislators who would provide him with the same level of protection and strategic advice that Raila enjoyed from his allies.
“My people, a true leader needs strong soldiers beside him. You have given me small people, yet we have great potential.
I’m now searching for 140 legislators who will defend me and our party, the DCP, just as Raila’s team did for him,” Gachagua said.
Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, in India after suffering a cardiac arrest during a morning walk while receiving medical treatment.
His death sent shockwaves across the nation and beyond, marking the end of a long and remarkable political career.
In his heartfelt message, Gachagua described Raila as a selfless patriot who devoted his entire life to fighting for justice, democracy, and the freedom of Kenyans.
He said that despite their political rivalry, he always respected Raila’s courage, resilience, and his unmatched ability to build and sustain a strong political movement through four general elections.
“You dedicated your entire life to serving humanity in various capacities — as a political activist, a civil servant, a university lecturer, a Member of Parliament, a party leader, a Cabinet Minister, and a Prime Minister,” Gachagua said. “In all these roles, your legacy of success and your impact on Kenya’s democracy remain deeply engraved in our nation’s history.”
Gachagua concluded by noting that Raila’s leadership had touched many hearts across the political divide and would continue to inspire future generations. He said Raila’s unwavering commitment to the people and his vision for a better Kenya would never be forgotten.
