Widow of Officer Killed While Guarding KCSE Exams Speaks Out, Appeals for Government Support

The family of the police officer who was tragically shot dead and had his gun stolen while manning a KCSE examination container in Turkana has spoken for the first time, appealing for help and justice from the government.

On Tuesday, the grieving family, led by the officer’s widow, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing him as the sole provider and a pillar of strength for the entire extended family. They said his untimely death has left a painful gap that will be hard to fill.

The widow, still struggling to come to terms with the loss, said that she and her late husband had many plans for the future, including starting a small business in 2026. She now hopes the government can step in to help her fulfill that dream or offer her employment to sustain her and her young child.

“The deceased is my husband, and he was still very young,” she said emotionally. “We have a small baby, and I am asking the government to please help me. The last time he came home in August, he promised to start a business for me next year.

But now that he is gone, those plans have vanished. I just pray that the government supports me, either by giving me a job or helping me start a business that can sustain us. He was the breadwinner, and now I don’t know where to begin.”

Besides caring for their baby, the widow revealed that she is now responsible for the officer’s aging mother, who depended heavily on her late son for support.

The family’s financial situation has worsened since the incident, leaving them unsure of how to meet their basic needs.

The officer’s sister-in-law also shared her grief, explaining that the slain policeman had been helping raise her children. He had taken full responsibility for their education and daily needs, treating them as his own. She too appealed for financial support to ensure the children continue with their schooling.

The family is urging the government and security agencies to move swiftly and bring the culprits behind the officer’s death to justice. They described him as a dedicated and disciplined officer who served his country with commitment and never hesitated to protect others.

According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Monday, November 4, while the officer was on duty guarding a KCSE examination container at the Deputy County Commissioner’s office in Turkana. Suspected bandits ambushed him and a fellow officer, opening fire without warning.

The officer was fatally shot during the attack, and the assailants made away with his service weapon—an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. His colleague survived the incident but was left deeply shaken.

Police officers rushed to the scene immediately after the shooting, but the fallen officer was pronounced dead on the spot. His body was later taken to a nearby mortuary as investigations commenced and a post-mortem awaited.

Preliminary findings suggest that the attackers targeted the officer primarily to steal his firearm. Authorities suspect the incident is linked to ongoing insecurity in the region, where armed bandits have continued to terrorize residents and security officers alike.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by police officers serving in volatile areas and raised calls for stronger security measures to protect both officers and civilians.

As the investigation continues, the officer’s family is pleading for both justice and support, saying they have been left with nothing but pain and unanswered questions.
