The Nyota Fund, officially known as the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project, is a government program designed to empower Kenyan youth through grants, training, and employment opportunities.

Supported by the World Bank, the initiative targets young people who are unemployed, underemployed, or running small businesses in need of support.

If you missed the first phase of applications, don’t worry — another opportunity is coming. Here’s everything you need to know about how to apply for the Nyota Fund when the next application window opens.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Nyota Fund, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Kenyan citizen.
  • Be between 18 and 29 years old (or up to 35 years for persons with disabilities).
  • Have a valid National ID card.
  • Be unemployed, underemployed, or self-employed in a small business.
  • Have an education level of Form Four (KCSE) or below.
  • Own a SIM card registered under your ID number.

The program specifically targets young people who face economic challenges and need support to start or grow a business, gain skills, or access job opportunities.

Benefits of the Nyota Fund

Once accepted into the program, beneficiaries can receive:

  • Business Grants: Up to KSh 50,000 to start or expand a small business.
  • Apprenticeship Opportunities: Training under professionals and certification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program.
  • Financial Literacy & Savings Support: Guidance on saving and investing through the NSSF “Haba Haba” scheme.

These benefits are meant to help young people achieve long-term financial independence and stability.

How to Apply for the Nyota Fund

Follow these simple steps to apply when the next phase opens:

  1. Check Application Status
Visit the official websites nyotaproject.go.ke or msea.go.ke to confirm that the application window is open in your county.
  2. Dial the USSD Code
On your mobile phone, dial *254#.
  3. Select “NYOTA Project”
From the menu that appears, choose the NYOTA Project option.
  4. Enter Your Details
Provide your full name, National ID number, education level, county, and employment status. Ensure that your phone number matches your ID registration details.
  5. Choose the Program You Want
Select whether you want to apply for Business Support, Apprenticeship, or Financial Literacy programs.
  6. Submit Your Application
Once you’ve filled in all the details, submit your application. You’ll receive a confirmation message after successful submission.
  7. Wait for Communication
Applicants who qualify will receive an SMS with instructions to take the Entrepreneurship Aptitude Test (EAT) or attend a physical validation exercise in their area.
  8. Attend Validation and Training
If invited, carry your National ID (and disability card if applicable) to the validation centre. After verification, successful applicants will undergo training before receiving funding or joining apprenticeship programs.

Important Reminders

  • The application is free. Do not pay anyone claiming to help you apply.
  • Ensure your ID and SIM details match. Mismatched information can lead to disqualification.
  • Use only your own mobile number during application.
  • Attend all scheduled interviews, tests, or validation sessions on time.
  • Follow official NYOTA and MSEA updates on websites and verified social media pages to avoid misinformation.

Final Word

The Nyota Fund is one of the most promising opportunities for Kenyan youth to improve their livelihoods.

Whether you want to start a business, learn new skills, or build financial discipline, this program gives you the tools to do so. If you didn’t apply before, use this guide to prepare and apply early when the next phase opens.

It’s free, fair, and designed to uplift young Kenyans ready to take charge of their future.
