How to Apply for Nyota Funds for Those Who Didn’t Apply

The Nyota Fund, officially known as the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project, is a government program designed to empower Kenyan youth through grants, training, and employment opportunities.

Supported by the World Bank, the initiative targets young people who are unemployed, underemployed, or running small businesses in need of support.

If you missed the first phase of applications, don’t worry — another opportunity is coming. Here’s everything you need to know about how to apply for the Nyota Fund when the next application window opens.


Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Nyota Fund, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Kenyan citizen.
  • Be between 18 and 29 years old (or up to 35 years for persons with disabilities).
  • Have a valid National ID card.
  • Be unemployed, underemployed, or self-employed in a small business.
  • Have an education level of Form Four (KCSE) or below.
  • Own a SIM card registered under your ID number.

The program specifically targets young people who face economic challenges and need support to start or grow a business, gain skills, or access job opportunities.


Benefits of the Nyota Fund

Once accepted into the program, beneficiaries can receive:

  • Business Grants: Up to KSh 50,000 to start or expand a small business.
  • Apprenticeship Opportunities: Training under professionals and certification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program.
  • Financial Literacy & Savings Support: Guidance on saving and investing through the NSSF “Haba Haba” scheme.

How to Apply for the Nyota Fund

Follow these simple steps to apply when the next phase opens:

  1. Check Application Status
    Visit the official websites nyotaproject.go.ke or msea.go.ke to confirm that the application window is open in your county.
  2. Dial the USSD Code
    On your mobile phone, dial *254#.
  3. Select “NYOTA Project”
    From the menu that appears, choose the NYOTA Project option.
  4. Enter Your Details
    Provide your full name, National ID number, education level, county, and employment status. Ensure that your phone number matches your ID registration details.
  5. Choose the Program You Want
    Select whether you want to apply for Business Support, Apprenticeship, or Financial Literacy programs.
  6. Submit Your Application
    Once you’ve filled in all the details, submit your application. You’ll receive a confirmation message after successful submission.
  7. Wait for Communication
    Applicants who qualify will receive an SMS with instructions to take the Entrepreneurship Aptitude Test (EAT) or attend a physical validation exercise in their area.
  8. Attend Validation and Training
    If invited, carry your National ID (and disability card if applicable) to the validation centre. After verification, successful applicants will undergo training before receiving funding or joining apprenticeship programs.
