Ruto Appoints Dr. Charles Olang’o Onudi as New Chairperson of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital
President William Ruto has made a new appointment to the government, naming Dr. Charles Olang’o Onudi as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
The announcement was made through a gazette notice dated November 7, 2025. According to the notice, Dr. Onudi will serve in this role for a period of three years.
His appointment is based on the provisions of the State Corporations Act (Cap. 446), which gives the President the power to appoint chairpersons of state institutions.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by paragraph 7 (1) (a) of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Order, 2025, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Dr. Olang’o Onudi to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for a period of three years, effective November 7, 2025,” read part of the gazette notice.
Dr. Onudi’s appointment has been welcomed by many, especially in Kisumu County, where he has long been recognized as a seasoned medical professional and administrator.
He has served in various senior roles within the county government, including as a member of the County Executive Committee. He also once held the position of acting County Secretary in Kisumu.
Before joining the county administration, Dr. Onudi served as a Provincial Medical Officer, where he played a key role in coordinating healthcare services across the region.
He later became a Director at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), where he contributed to improving training standards for medical students across the country.
One of his most notable achievements came in 2019, when he was involved in negotiations with the National Union of Nurses. His efforts helped end a crippling nurses’ strike that had disrupted health services in Kisumu County.
Dr. Onudi’s long history in the public health sector dates back to 2010, when he was appointed Director of KMTC by then-Medical Services Minister Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o.
Although the appointment stirred debate in Parliament at the time, it marked an important phase in his leadership journey.
His latest appointment comes at a crucial time for JOOTRH, following its elevation to a national State Corporation. The hospital, which serves millions of people from Kisumu and the greater Western Kenya region, is one of the most important Level 6 health facilities in the country.
As the new Non-Executive Chairperson, Dr. Onudi will play a key role in strengthening the hospital’s governance, ensuring that its operations are transparent, efficient, and aligned with national health objectives.
His experience and leadership are expected to guide JOOTRH in expanding its services and maintaining its reputation as a leading referral and teaching hospital in Kenya.
With this appointment, President Ruto aims to reinforce leadership and accountability within major health institutions across the country, signaling his administration’s focus on improving healthcare governance and service delivery.
