Breaking: ODM Makes Leadership Changes, Including Party Leader

ODM Confirms Major Leadership Changes, Including New Party Leader

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially confirmed Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as the new Party Leader, marking a key moment in the party’s transition period.

Oburu, who had been serving in an interim capacity since October, was formally elevated to the position following approval by the party’s National Governing Council (NGC) on Thursday, November 13.

In a detailed statement, ODM announced that the NGC had not only confirmed Oburu’s appointment but also approved a number of other senior leadership positions within the party.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, and Kisii Governor Simba Arati were officially named as Deputy Party Leaders (DPLs).

“The National Governing Council (NGC) has approved the appointment of Senator Oburu Odinga as the Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement. Also approved are DPLs Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, Godfrey Osotsi, and Simba Arati as Deputy Party Leaders,” ODM said in its statement.

The party also confirmed several other key changes. Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga was appointed as the Deputy Organising Secretary, while Rarieda MP Otiendo Amollo and Turkana South MP Ariko Namoit were approved as Vice Chairpersons.

The two will now serve alongside Johnes Mwaruma and Christine Lemein, who already hold Vice Chair positions.

In addition, Rosa Buyu was appointed as the Secretary of Political Affairs, further strengthening the party’s leadership structure.

All the newly appointed officials are expected to officially assume their roles after ratification by the National Delegates Convention (NDC), which serves as ODM’s top decision-making organ.

Oburu’s confirmation as the party’s permanent leader comes just weeks after he was named interim leader following the passing of his brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died on Wednesday, October 15, in India.

Raila’s death left a major gap in ODM, as he had been the party’s founding figure and long-time political icon.

Oburu’s temporary appointment was first made by the National Executive Committee (NEC) on October 16, shortly before Raila’s body was flown back to Kenya.

His confirmation had since been viewed as a matter of when rather than if, as the party had openly stated its intention to install him as Raila’s permanent successor.

This leadership restructuring comes at a critical moment for ODM, as the party prepares to mark its 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa. The three-day event, scheduled from Friday, November 14 to Sunday, November 16, is expected to attract top ODM officials, influential politicians, and national leaders. Notably, President William Ruto is expected to attend the ODM Founders’ Dinner on Saturday, a gesture that highlights the evolving political landscape in Kenya.

Party insiders view the recent appointments as a clear sign of ODM’s efforts to reposition itself for the future, especially as it adjusts to life after Raila Odinga.

The leadership changes are also seen as part of ODM’s broader strategy to strengthen its internal structures, build unity, and prepare for the 2027 General Election.

At the same time, the party continues to pursue a broad-based political partnership with President Ruto’s administration—an alliance that has stirred both optimism and skepticism among supporters.

ODM leaders have described this partnership as a move aimed at fostering national unity while protecting the party’s long-term political interests.

As ODM enters this new chapter under Oburu Odinga’s leadership, attention will now turn to how he navigates internal party dynamics, maintains Raila’s legacy, and steers the movement towards a new political direction.

The coming months will be crucial in defining the party’s strength, stability, and relevance in Kenya’s fast-changing political arena.
