Fireworks as ODM Leaders Clash Over Attack on Winnie Odinga

ODM leaders on Saturday found themselves in a heated confrontation after Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo publicly took on first-time MCA Robert Alai over his controversial remarks about Winnie Odinga, the late Raila Odinga’s daughter.

Millie Odhiambo strongly rebuked Alai following his comments targeting Winnie after her address during the ODM at 20 celebration event in Mombasa.

Her reaction came after Alai openly questioned Winnie’s political experience and her influence within the ODM party, accusing senior party figures of allowing the former prime minister’s daughter to “lecture them.”

On Saturday, Alai’s remarks stirred tension as he suggested Winnie lacked the depth and background to speak authoritatively within the party. His sentiments quickly gained attention, sparking anger among loyalists and senior officials.

In a fiery response, Millie Odhiambo warned Alai against what she described as his pattern of disrespect toward women leaders.
“Before I finish, I would like to warn the person who attacked Winnie Odinga. I defend women, and I want to say this clearly: Alai, you enjoy harassing women, but where Millie stands, we will face you head-on,” she declared.

The MP went on to emphasise that Winnie Odinga remains an important pillar in the Odinga family and deserves dignified treatment, even referring to the EALA MP as “the heart of Baba.”

Millie also criticised the timing of Alai’s comments, calling it insensitive and disrespectful since the Odinga family is still mourning Raila Odinga’s passing just a month ago.

The clash did not end at the event. The disagreement quickly spilled over to social media, where Alai attempted to justify his statements by linking some ODM leaders to Winnie’s earlier claims that a section of the party was secretly planning to “sell the party.”

But Millie Odhiambo hit back again through a strongly worded Facebook post, accusing Alai of habitually attacking female leaders without consequences.
“Robert Alai, you are used to attacking women and getting away with it… Winnie did not attack Governor Gladys Wanga.

In fact, by going after Winnie, you are indirectly attacking Wanga,” she wrote.
She added, “It is only one month since Winnie lost her father. It is uncouth and uncultured to attack her at such a time… Bring it on. I am waiting.”

The exchange comes at a time when ODM is facing internal tension, with dozens of party leaders gathered at the Coast to mark 20 years since its formation. Beneath the celebrations, disagreements and issues of succession appear to be simmering.

In another separate incident, cracks widened when Embakasi East MP Babu Owino appeared to express dissatisfaction after he was left out of the party’s newly unveiled leadership lineup. His comments suggested discomfort and raised questions about fairness within the party’s new structure.

Overall, the confrontations highlighted the growing friction within ODM, revealing deeper struggles over respect, leadership, and internal unity at a time when the party is trying to reinvent itself for the future.
