A tragic incident has been reported in Kitale, where a DCI officer lost his life after being stabbed during an operation to arrest a murder suspect.
According to police, a gang tried to rescue the suspect, leading to a violent confrontation. In the chaos, one youth was also fatally shot as officers attempted to gain control of the situation.
Trans Nzoia County Criminal Investigation Officer, Josephat Ndung’u, confirmed the officer’s death and noted that investigations are already underway.
He explained that detectives are working to understand what triggered the attack and the exact events that took place before, during, and after the confrontation.
So far, one suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident, but authorities believe more individuals may have been involved in planning the ambush.
Reports show that the slain detective was in the Matisi area with fellow officers when they moved in to arrest a murder suspect.
The team had followed intelligence that placed the suspect in the area, but their mission quickly turned violent. Investigators are now piecing together every detail to determine whether the gang acted alone or as part of a wider criminal network.
Even as police continue their investigations, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has not yet released any information regarding the attack. IPOA normally steps in to independently review such incidents, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Their role includes examining whether there were any signs of police negligence, possible operational errors, or misconduct that may have contributed to the outcome. Kenyans now await their findings to better understand what went wrong.
Previous Attacks on DCI Officers
This deadly attack comes barely weeks after another violent incident targeting detectives. On November 12, three DCI officers were seriously injured in Kasipul Constituency, Homa Bay County, after they encountered armed assailants during campaigns for a recently concluded byelection.
According to police reports, the officers were on a mission to arrest suspects linked to the killing of two youths in the Opondo area.
The team, which included Rachuonyo South Sub-County DCI boss Daniel Muhuhi, was ambushed at the homestead of the late former Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were in Kachien Village. The suspects had reportedly fled to the location after receiving intelligence that officers were closing in on them.
The detectives had traced the suspects to Kosele Trading Centre before following their trail to the late MP’s homestead. Instead of surrendering, the group launched a violent attack on the officers, leaving them with serious injuries.
The incident highlighted the growing risks faced by security officers, especially when confronting dangerous criminals who are increasingly turning to violence to avoid arrest.
As investigations into the latest attack in Kitale continue, questions remain about the rising trend of criminals targeting law enforcement officers.
Authorities are now under pressure to strengthen safety measures for detectives in the field and ensure those responsible for these attacks are brought to justice.
