The mabati company has confirmed that the Chinese worker who assaulted a Kenyan colleague in a widely shared video has been dismissed from his position.
In a statement released on Sunday, the company clarified that the man involved was not an investor, as some reports had suggested, but simply an employee, just like the Kenyan worker.
The company strongly condemned the incident and emphasized that it does not tolerate any form of abuse or mistreatment of employees, regardless of nationality, race, or background.
The statement added that, alongside terminating the worker’s contract, steps were already being taken to deport him back to China. “It is important to note that the person involved is an ordinary worker and not an investor.
We deeply regret the incident and want to reassure our customers, partners, and the public that immediate disciplinary action has been taken,” the company said.
“His employment has been terminated with immediate effect, and arrangements are underway to return him to China as soon as possible, even though a reconciliation occurred between him and the Kenyan worker after the incident,” the statement continued.
The assault, which was captured in a viral video showing the foreign worker striking the Kenyan employee with an iron sheet, sparked widespread outrage online. Many members of the public called for the aggressor to be deported.
Despite the incident, the Kenyan worker involved publicly forgave his attacker, shaking hands with him and stating that he would not be influenced by others in making his decision. “I have forgiven him, and I have no problem with him anymore. I still want to continue working here,” the Kenyan worker said.
He added, “Next time, if there is a problem, he can call me to his office, and I will accept my mistakes. I have forgiven him, and I will not listen to what other people say because the disagreement has ended. He is my boss, and he will continue to be my boss.”
The Central Organisation of Trade Unions, Kenya (COTU-K), was among the groups that demanded the deportation of the Chinese worker, reflecting public anger over the incident.
Following the dismissal, the Chinese Embassy in Kenya acknowledged the company’s decision but emphasized that this was an isolated case that should not tarnish the reputation of all Chinese workers in the country.
“The Embassy consistently reminds Chinese citizens in Kenya to follow local laws, regulations, and cultural norms, and the vast majority comply,” the Embassy stated on Sunday.
The Embassy added, “We believe this was an isolated incident and should not impact investment cooperation between Chinese and Kenyan companies.
At the same time, it serves as a reminder for all Chinese citizens in Kenya to maintain mutual respect with their Kenyan colleagues and to always act in accordance with local laws, regulations, and cultural customs.”
