Shock in Makueni as Trade Executive Sonia Nzilani Found Dead in Her Makindu Home
Makueni County has been thrown into deep shock and sadness after the sudden death of Trade Executive Sonia Nzilani, who was found lifeless in her Makindu home on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr confirmed her passing, describing it as a painful loss for the county and for all who worked closely with her.
According to police reports, Nzilani was discovered dead inside her house in Makindu, and her body was later taken to the mortuary as investigations continue. An autopsy is expected to shed more light on what may have caused her untimely death.
Her passing came on the same day she was expected to participate in several community programs, including an environmental awareness activity she had been helping organize.
Friends and colleagues say they were shocked when news of her death spread, as she had appeared active and fully engaged in her duties the previous day.
Nzilani had shared a poster on Friday highlighting an upcoming event at Kilumilo Primary School in Mtito Andei, planned for the same Saturday she died. Many who saw the post said they could not imagine that it would be her last public communication.
Tributes have continued to pour in from leaders, residents, and people across Kenya, expressing grief and disbelief.
Those who knew her described her as dedicated, warm, hardworking, and deeply passionate about community causes. Social media has been filled with emotional messages celebrating her service and mourning her sudden departure.
Before her death, Nzilani served as the County Executive Committee Member (CEC) in charge of Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism. Governor Mutula remembered her as a talented environmentalist who went beyond her official duties to champion tree planting and nature conservation.
Because of this passion, she had earned the popular nickname “Syomiti”, symbolizing her strong stand for environmental protection and sustainability.
The county government has promised to release more information as investigations progress. Officials have also asked the public to give the family space and respect their privacy as they navigate this difficult period.
Nzilani was also known nationally for a controversy earlier in the year, after she made remarks linking a girl’s death to her menstrual cycle during a funeral.
The comments triggered widespread criticism, leading to her 45-day suspension from office. She had claimed that menstruating women attract crocodiles—an assertion experts quickly dismissed as scientifically false.
The county government distanced itself from the remarks, saying they were personal opinions that did not represent the county’s position. Nzilani later apologized publicly and returned to her duties.
Her death has left a huge gap in Makueni’s leadership and among the many people she interacted with through her work. As residents continue to mourn, many say they will remember her for her energy, her ambition, and the strong commitment she showed to her community.
