Khalwale Reveals Why He Ditched Ruto

Khalwale Explains Why He Broke Away From President Ruto

The Senate Majority Whip and Kakamega Senator, Boni Khalwale, has openly explained why he distanced himself from President William Ruto’s political camp.

According to Khalwale, his decision was influenced by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who convinced him that if he became President, he would run the country using what he described as “brutal government efficiency.”

Khalwale made these remarks during a political rally held in Ekerenyo, Nyamira County, on November 23, 2025. He attended the event alongside Matiang’i and several opposition leaders as they campaigned for the united opposition candidate in the Nyasiongo Ward by-election.

The Senator, who was elected under the UDA ticket, revealed that he once held a four-hour private meeting with Matiang’i shortly after the former CS announced his presidential bid.

During this meeting, Matiang’i’s promise of strong leadership and strict governance deeply influenced him.

“Matiang’i, you won me over when you said that if you become President, you will run the government with brutal efficiency,” Khalwale told the crowd.

He also used the moment to criticize President Ruto’s agenda of transforming Kenya into a first-world nation, arguing that such a dream is unrealistic because the current administration is, in his view, filled with corrupt officials who are holding the country back.

In recent months, Khalwale has been actively supporting united opposition candidates in different by-election campaigns across the country.

This includes openly backing DAP-K’s Seth Panyako in the Malava by-election, while strongly opposing and campaigning against UDA’s candidate, David Ndakwa.

His actions have sparked heavy criticism from leaders within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, who accuse him of betraying the party that sponsored him to the Senate. They argue that his open defiance shows disloyalty and undermines the unity of the ruling alliance.

Due to his behavior, the UDA Party earlier in October issued Khalwale a formal letter demanding that he explain why the party should not take disciplinary action against him for endorsing and campaigning for opposition candidates during the Malava parliamentary by-election.

The move signaled growing tension between Khalwale and the ruling party leadership.

Overall, Khalwale’s latest remarks and political moves show a widening rift between him and President Ruto’s team, as he continues to align himself more closely with the opposition while defending his shift as a decision based on leadership principles and the desire for a more efficient government.
