The Joyful Women Initiative (JoyWo) is a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded by First Lady H.E. Rachel Ruto on Saturday, August 29, 2009. The organisation was created with a clear mission: to promote women’s economic empowerment and financial inclusion across Kenya.
For the past sixteen years, JoyWo has operated on a simple yet powerful belief: the biggest challenge women face is not a lack of creativity, hard work, or business ideas, but limited access to financial capital that can help turn their ideas into reality.
During the 16th Anniversary Celebrations of JoyWo held on November 27, 2025, at Kasarani Stadium, First Lady Rachel Ruto highlighted the organisation’s remarkable achievements.
She revealed that JoyWo has circulated over KSh 4 billion and has helped approximately 300,000 women across the country to start and grow their businesses through the initiative.
The structure of JoyWo is designed specifically to serve women who are often left out of formal financial systems. Many women face barriers such as lack of collateral, low financial literacy, or limited time and mobility, which prevent them from accessing traditional banking services.
JoyWo solves this problem by bringing financial activities directly to the community level, eliminating the need for bank visits. At the heart of this success is the organisation’s unique approach known as Table Banking.
Table Banking is a group-based system where 10 to 30 women meet monthly to save and borrow money collectively. During these meetings, members place their savings “on the table,” starting from a minimum of KSh 200 up to a limit agreed upon by the group.
This method builds a sense of trust among members, as the system relies on the principle, “Your character is the collateral, your integrity is the currency,” as emphasized by the First Lady. Peer accountability encourages high repayment rates, allowing the funds to grow quickly and sustainably.
Thanks to the Table Banking model, JoyWo has expanded significantly. What began with just 60 women meeting under a Grevillea robusta tree in Eldoret in 2009 has now grown into a nationwide network, becoming a cornerstone of women’s economic empowerment in Kenya.
The organisation’s impact is evident in the many success stories of its members. For example, Mrs. Gitobu from Meru used the support from JoyWo to expand her dairy farm and construct rental properties, improving her family’s livelihood.
Similarly, Diana from Nairobi turned a small KSh 500 loan into a thriving business that now operates a certified skincare and food brand. These examples show how small, flexible loans can lead to substantial economic transformation.
Looking forward, Rachel Ruto shared that JoyWo is embracing technology to secure a lasting generational legacy.
The initiative is now focusing on digital Table Banking, using mobile tools and online reporting systems. This digitisation ensures that women, whether in remote villages or large cities, can access financial opportunities efficiently, securely, and with dignity.
Today, JoyWo boasts over 240,000 members, more than 16,000 active groups, and over KSh 2.8 billion in circulating funds.
The organisation continues to empower women, proving that when given the right tools and support, women can create thriving businesses, uplift communities, and transform the economic landscape of the country.
