A shocking incident in Butinindi village, Mukono district, has left residents terrified and confused after members of a small religious sect kept a dead man’s body for six days, believing he would come back to life.
The group’s leader, a self-proclaimed prophet named Suzan Nelima, has now disappeared after authorities exposed the situation.
How the Body Was Found
According to Nile Post, the truth came out when villagers noticed a strong, unusual smell coming from a small house by the roadside.
Worried, they informed local leaders and the police. When officers entered the home, they discovered the body of 26-year-old Ashe Segawa, which had been left inside for nearly a week.
Followers of the sect had reportedly spent days praying over him, trusting their prophet’s promise that he would rise on the seventh day.
Segawa’s brother, Abbey Kafeero, said that Prophet Nelima visited the house several times during those six days. She repeatedly told the grieving family that they should stay calm and continue praying because Segawa would “wake up again.”
Family Blocked from Seeking Medical Help
Before Segawa passed away, his family tried to get him medical assistance because he was seriously ill. However, Nelima allegedly stopped them. She insisted that taking him to a hospital would interrupt God’s work and argued that prayer alone would heal him.
Authorities who entered the house described the environment as extremely disturbing. No effort had been made to alert medical workers, plan a burial, or even report the death. Villagers said the sect members believed that ending the prayer session early would “block the miracle” their prophet promised.
Another Sick Man Found in the Sect’s Church
The situation worsened when residents visited the sect’s small church building. Inside, they found another very sick man lying on the floor while followers surrounded him, praying instead of getting him medical care.
The area chairman, Peter Kayiira, strongly condemned the group and promised immediate action. He said the sick man would be taken to a hospital and that the community must prevent such incidents from happening again.
Warning from Church Leaders
Well-known Pentecostal leader Bishop Michael Kyazze warned that many desperate people are falling into the hands of untrained, unregulated spiritual figures. He encouraged communities to question what new prophets teach instead of blindly trusting them with their health and lives.
Police have already arrested four members of the sect, including Segawa’s mother, Mary Nakalanzi, for helping conceal the body. Investigations are still ongoing, while Prophet Nelima—the woman said to be behind the entire ritual—has run away from the village.
Related Incident in Kiambu
In another heartbreaking event, a family in Kiambu was left devastated after a woman harmed her 11-year-old daughter.
Her husband said she had been making strange, worrying statements that suggested she was involved in a cult.
He also revealed that she joined the unusual religious group in 2019 and her behavior had been changing ever since.
