Newton Karish Breaks Silence After Defeat in Mbeere North By-election
United Opposition’s parliamentary candidate in the Mbeere North by-election, Newton Karish, has finally spoken out, five days after losing the tightly contested race.
Karish released a detailed statement on December 4, 2025, urging his supporters to remain calm and peaceful as he prepares to challenge the election outcome.
Karish began by thanking all his supporters for standing with him throughout the campaign and during the November 27 by-election. He noted that their commitment and encouragement kept his team strong during a very competitive political season.
He asked residents and his supporters to exercise patience as he moves to the next stage of contesting the results, saying the fight for fairness is still ongoing.
“I urge you to be calm, maintain peace, and be patient as we pursue the next steps to fight for justice over the just concluded by-election outcome,” Karish stated in his message. His remarks came shortly after two voters filed a petition in court on December 4, 2025.
The petitioners are challenging Leonard Wa Muthende’s victory, arguing that he should not have been allowed to contest since, according to them, he was not registered as a voter in Mbeere North.
Karish also took time to appreciate the diverse groups that supported him, highlighting peasants, young people, women, elders, and all residents who believed in his vision for the constituency.
He praised them for standing united and showing resilience despite the challenges faced during the campaign period.
“Today, I celebrate you—the peasants, the youth, the women, the elders, and every resident who believes in a better and brighter Mbeere North. Together, against all odds, we have shown that when a people stand united, nothing is impossible,” he wrote.
Although he lost the seat to UDA’s Leonard Wa Muthende—who secured 15,802 votes against his 15,308—Karish maintained that his mission to serve the people is far from over.
He promised to continue advocating for a more inclusive and progressive Mbeere North, adding that he will remain committed to leadership built on integrity, humility, and dedication.
The by-election has been surrounded by controversy, with both sides trading accusations. The United Opposition claimed the poll was marred by irregularities, including alleged voter bribery, marked ballot papers, and the involvement of hired goons.
On the other hand, UDA accused the United Opposition of similar misconduct, claiming that their supporters engaged in voter intimidation through the use of goons and other questionable activities.
As the petition heads to court and tensions remain high, Karish’s call for peace aims to calm residents while the legal process takes its course.
