A tragic road accident along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa Highway has claimed several lives after a head-on collision between a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and a trailer.
The deadly crash happened on the morning of Sunday, December 7, in the Masenyi area near Voi, leaving the nation in shock as authorities work to establish the exact number of fatalities.
Reports indicate that the PSV was travelling towards Mombasa, while the trailer was moving in the opposite direction when the collision occurred. Early accounts from witnesses suggest that around seven people may have died, though officials are yet to release confirmed figures.
The impact left the front section of the PSV completely wrecked, while the trailer suffered only minor damage. Both vehicles veered off the road following the crash, showing just how forceful the collision was.
Photos shared with Kenyans.co.ke paint a devastating scene, with emergency responders, police officers, and other motorists rushing to help the survivors and secure the area.
Those who arrived first worked desperately to pull out victims trapped inside the PSV as authorities coordinated rescue operations.
Later that morning, the Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) released a statement confirming the incident and strongly criticising the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
MAK accused KeNHA of failing to upgrade the busy highway into a dual carriageway despite years of increasing traffic and repeated accidents.
“Kinatwa heading to Mombasa head-on Trailer. Several travellers have died. Three people survived with serious injuries. We blame KeNHA’s 20-year delay in converting this highway into a dual carriageway,” MAK said in a statement.
This heartbreaking incident comes just two days after another fatal crash on Friday, December 5, in Bumala, Busia County, where a PSV overturned, killing four people.
The Friday accident happened in the Wakhungu area of Nangina Ward, Funyula Constituency, as the victims were travelling from Bumala town towards Port Victoria.
Images from that scene show a heavily damaged vehicle as residents and local authorities worked together to rescue injured passengers.
According to Samia Sub-County OCPD Richard Moracha, the victims included the driver, a woman, and two men. The injured survivors were quickly taken to Nangina Mission Hospital for urgent treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the Busia accident was caused by a burst front tyre, which made the driver lose control.
OCPD Moracha assured the public that security agencies have already launched detailed investigations to uncover exactly what caused the accident and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Both incidents have reignited calls for improved road safety measures, better highway infrastructure, and stronger enforcement of traffic regulations to protect travellers on Kenya’s major roads.
