Outrage as CCTV Captures Police Assaulting Youth at an Entertainment Joint

Outrage as CCTV Shows Police Brutality Against Youths at Nandi Hills Entertainment Joint

Public anger is growing after CCTV footage emerged showing police officers violently assaulting young men at a pool hall in Nandi Hills, Nandi County.

The eight-minute surveillance video, which has been widely shared on social media, has triggered nationwide condemnation and renewed calls for the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to take immediate action against the officers involved.

The footage clearly shows several uniformed police officers, armed with guns and batons, forcefully entering the recreational facility. Inside the room were about 12 young men, most of whom appeared to be peacefully playing pool.

Upon entry, the officers ordered everyone to lie on the floor before proceeding to assault some of the patrons using batons, despite no visible resistance.

According to timestamps captured on the CCTV system, the incident took place on January 10, 2026. The surveillance system also recorded audio, in which one of the officers can be heard demanding identification documents from the youths.

Tensions escalated when one of the young men attempted to leave the premises, prompting officers to turn on him and beat him repeatedly as others looked on in fear.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a clear case of police brutality and abuse of power. In a statement, the Senator expressed outrage over what he termed as criminal acts committed by officers tasked with protecting citizens.

“I want to strongly condemn these acts of police brutality, criminality, and abuse of human rights perpetrated by police officers in Nandi Hills Town,” Senator Cherargei said.

The Senator has demanded that Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja immediately interdict and suspend all officers involved to allow for independent and impartial investigations.

He emphasized that failure to take swift action would only encourage a culture of impunity within the police service.

“I demand that the Inspector General of Police Kanja should immediately interdict and suspend the said police officers for this act of impunity. This will pave the way for independent investigations to be carried out,” he added.

Observers and human rights activists have pointed out that playing pool is not a criminal offense under Kenyan law. Many have questioned why the youths were subjected to such extreme and unnecessary force, especially in a setting where no immediate threat was evident.

Senator Cherargei further noted that the officers’ actions were in direct violation of Article 244 of the Constitution, which requires the National Police Service to respect human rights, uphold the rule of law, and act with professionalism and discipline at all times.

He has also called on the Senate Committee on National Security to urgently investigate the incident and ensure that justice is delivered to the victims. In addition, the Senator urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to move swiftly and initiate prosecution proceedings against the officers captured in the video.

“IPOA has been reluctant to prosecute police officers who were allegedly involved in killings in the Kimwani area, Nandi County,” Cherargei stated, warning that continued inaction would erode public trust in oversight institutions.

The incident has added to ongoing concerns about police violence in Kenya. According to the Missing Voices Annual Report 2024–2025, compiled by human rights organisations, cases of police brutality remain alarmingly high. The report documented at least 104 police-related killings and 55 enforced disappearances between 2024 and 2025, with the majority of victims being young men aged between 19 and 34 years.

During the June to August 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests alone, at least 63 people were reportedly killed by police, while more than 65 others disappeared under unclear circumstances. These figures have continued to fuel public debate about accountability within the security sector.

Senator Cherargei has vowed to relentlessly pursue justice for the victims, insisting that those responsible must face the full force of the law for the harm caused to his constituents.

Efforts by Newshub.co.ke to obtain a response from authorities in Nandi Hills were unsuccessful. By the time this story was published, no official statement had been issued regarding the incident.
