Peter Salasya Begins 14-Day Peace Campaign After Court Orders
Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has officially launched a peace and cohesion campaign on social media after a court directed him to do so as part of conditions to resolve his hate speech case.
On Monday, January 19, the court declined to immediately withdraw the case against Salasya, even though he had reached an agreement with the complainant, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
Instead, the court ruled that the charges could only be dropped if the MP complied with specific orders aimed at promoting peace and national unity.
As part of the ruling, the court ordered Salasya to issue a public apology and to actively take part in a peace and cohesion campaign.
The campaign is required to run for 14 days, mainly on social media platforms, and must focus on unity, coexistence, and national integration.
Although Salasya and NCIC had earlier agreed to settle the matter outside court through conciliation, the court maintained oversight of the process. It allowed the settlement to proceed but insisted that the MP must first meet the conditions set by the court before the case can be withdrawn.
Following the court’s decision, Salasya confirmed that he had already begun the campaign. In a statement shared on his social media accounts, he announced plans to roll out a countrywide peace initiative in full compliance with the law and court orders.
“I wish to formally inform the nation that I will be launching a countrywide peace campaign in the coming days in full compliance with the law and the orders of the court,” Salasya stated.
He emphasized that the campaign would be non-partisan, inclusive, and people-centered. According to the MP, the initiative will involve youth, elders, women, faith leaders, and other community stakeholders from different parts of the country.
He said the main goal of the campaign is to promote unity, peaceful coexistence, and national stability.
Salasya also called on faith-based organizations, civil society groups, peace actors, youth leaders, and community representatives to support the campaign in various ways.
He assured the public that he would conduct the initiative with discipline, humility, transparency, and full respect for the rule of law.
The MP noted that the peace campaign comes at a sensitive time when the country is experiencing rising political tensions and strong emotions.
He stressed that peace, dialogue, and respect for the law are the only ways Kenya can move forward, especially as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
His statements officially mark the beginning of the 14-day campaign, after which the court will review his compliance.
The court directed Salasya to file proof of the campaign and also to hold a press conference focused on peace, cohesion, and national integration before the case can be formally withdrawn.
Speaking outside the court after the ruling, Salasya thanked the NCIC and the judiciary for allowing the matter to be resolved outside the courtroom. He reaffirmed his commitment to follow all court orders and contribute positively to national unity.
The case dates back to May 2025, when Salasya was charged with making inflammatory remarks on his social media accounts.
The comments were alleged to have targeted members of a specific community and to have the potential to stir ethnic hatred between two communities. He was arrested and later released on a KSh 200,000 cash bail.
The NCIC, working together with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), formally charged the MP before the court later directed NCIC to oversee a settlement process outside court. The ongoing peace campaign is now a key requirement in bringing the case to a close.
