United Opposition to Name Candidate to Face Ruto in 2027

United Opposition to Unveil Single Candidate to Challenge Ruto in 2027

The United Opposition has announced plans to name a single presidential candidate to face President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, saying the decision is meant to show unity and strengthen their chances of winning.

The coalition said the candidate will be unveiled after the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) holds its National Delegates Conference.

The announcement was made during the Democratic Party of Kenya’s National Delegates Conference held at Ufungamano House in Nairobi.

During the event, opposition leaders also revealed that they plan to take legal action against individuals linked to a recent attack targeting DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua at a church in Othaya.

The leaders strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an attack on democracy and freedom of expression. They insisted that political violence and intimidation have no place in Kenya’s democratic space and vowed to pursue justice through lawful means.

DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua used the occasion to reaffirm his strong commitment to opposition unity. He said both personal and party interests would be set aside to ensure the opposition fields only one presidential candidate in 2027.

Gachagua stated that the opposition is fully determined to block President Ruto from securing a second term, adding that unity is the only way to achieve that goal.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka echoed similar sentiments, announcing plans to convene a national meeting bringing together all leaders aligned with the “one-term movement.”

He explained that the forum would focus on building consensus and improving coordination within the opposition.

Kalonzo also emphasized the importance of boosting voter registration across the country, saying higher voter turnout would greatly improve the opposition’s chances.

According to Kalonzo, collective planning and cooperation would help eliminate internal divisions that could otherwise weaken the opposition campaign ahead of 2027.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i dismissed claims that the opposition is divided, warning that those hoping to benefit from internal disagreements would be disappointed.

He maintained that opposition leaders are firmly united and committed to working together.

“For anyone betting on our differences, you will lose that bet. We are going to stand together and remain united,” Matiang’i said.

Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua said the opposition alliance is held together by a shared vision of restoring constitutionalism, accountability, and good governance.

She noted that the unity within the coalition is based on strong principles, not convenience, with a clear focus on strengthening institutions and upholding the rule of law.

DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa stressed that unity is not a choice but a necessity if the opposition hopes to defeat President Ruto. He stated that presenting one candidate is critical to avoiding vote splitting, which could cost the opposition victory.

Wrapping up the speeches, former Attorney General Justin Muturi said the Democratic Party is ready to fully play its role within the coalition. He observed that Kenyans are politically aware, informed, and increasingly eager for change.

“History will judge us not by what we say, but by whether we rise when the nation needs us the most,” Muturi said.

The opposition leaders maintained that a united front, strong voter mobilization, and shared values would be key pillars of their strategy as they prepare for the 2027 General Election.
