Thousands of Kenyan workers could face uncertainty over their jobs after the government announced plans that may lead to the closure of nearly 300 companies across the country in the coming months.
The move has raised concern among employees and industry players, especially as many of the affected firms operate in sectors that support key parts of the economy.
In a gazette notice published on Friday, February 6, 2026, the Registrar of Companies, Damaris Lukwo, confirmed that a total of 293 companies have been earmarked for removal from the official register.
The notice explained that the affected firms have been given a period of three months to provide valid reasons why they should continue to remain registered and operational in Kenya.
If no satisfactory explanation is provided within that timeframe, the companies will be struck off the register starting in May this year.
According to the notice, the action is being taken in line with the provisions of the Companies Act, which gives the Registrar authority to remove companies that fail to meet legal and operational requirements.
The notice stated that the names of the listed companies will be removed from the registry once the three-month period lapses, unless any interested party comes forward to show cause why the companies should not be dissolved.
This process allows business owners, creditors, or other affected parties an opportunity to respond before final action is taken.
The companies listed for possible closure operate in a wide range of sectors that are important to Kenya’s economic activity. A significant number are involved in construction and engineering services, including building projects, infrastructure works, and road construction.
These industries employ large numbers of workers directly and indirectly, meaning any closures could have ripple effects across suppliers, contractors, and local communities that depend on such projects.
Several technology and digital service providers have also appeared on the list. These include companies offering IT support, software development, data analysis services, cybersecurity solutions, and digital marketing services.
As Kenya continues to grow its digital economy, the potential exit of such firms may affect both employment opportunities and service delivery for businesses that rely on tech-based solutions.
In addition, some of the affected companies operate in transport and logistics, including clearing and forwarding services that facilitate both local and international trade.
These businesses play an important role in the movement of goods across borders and within the country, supporting importers, exporters, and supply chains. Their closure could therefore disrupt operations for businesses that depend on efficient logistics services.
The manufacturing and industrial sector has not been spared either. Companies involved in agro-processing, fabrication, industrial safety equipment, and pharmaceutical-related services have also been listed for dissolution.
These sectors are considered vital for economic growth and job creation, especially in value addition and local production.
The tourism and travel industry has also been touched by the announcement, with several tour operators and travel agencies appearing in the notice. This comes at a time when the sector has been working to fully recover and expand following previous economic challenges.
Similarly, firms operating in advertising, media, and creative services have also been included, raising concerns about potential job losses in Kenya’s growing creative economy.
The latest development comes amid increased government efforts to enforce compliance among registered companies and ensure that business records in the country remain accurate and up to date.
Authorities have been pushing for companies to meet statutory obligations, including filing annual returns and maintaining active operations, as required by law.
Under Kenyan law, a company may be struck off the register for several reasons. These include failure to submit annual returns, prolonged inactivity, or evidence suggesting that the business is no longer operating. However, the law also allows certain exceptions.
For example, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) may intervene to suspend the dissolution process if there is an ongoing tax dispute or unresolved financial matter involving the company.
The Registry of Companies operates under the Business Registration Services (BRS), a state corporation that carries out its responsibilities under the Companies Act of 2015.
The agency functions under the Office of the Attorney General and is tasked with regulating company registration, compliance, and record management in Kenya.
As the three-month window progresses, business owners, employees, and stakeholders will be watching closely to see how many of the listed companies manage to comply with the requirements and avoid closure, as the outcome could have significant implications for employment and business activity across several sectors of the economy.
