Man intercepted after rushing toward President Ruto in Wajir
A brief security scare occurred in Wajir County after a man suddenly rushed toward President William Ruto while he was addressing a public gathering, prompting a swift response from his security team.
The incident took place during the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme, where the President was presiding over the disbursement of youth funds and addressing residents at a public event.
According to multiple reports, the man emerged from behind or within the crowd and ran toward the podium while the President was speaking.
Security officers, including close protection personnel and the President’s aide-de-camp, immediately intervened and restrained the man before he could reach the Head of State.
The interruption briefly forced President Ruto to pause his speech as the situation was brought under control.
Authorities later confirmed that the man was swiftly apprehended and the programme continued without further disruption.
President Ruto’s reaction on stage
Videos from the scene show the President remaining calm during the incident. After the man was subdued, Ruto reportedly asked his security team to relax and handle the situation calmly, even telling officers to let the man sit down as he continued with his speech.
This response helped ease tension among the crowd, and the event proceeded normally afterward.
Who the man was and his explanation
Later reports indicated that the individual claimed he wanted to speak to the President about personal or political matters.
Some media outlets identified him as an aspiring local political candidate who said he intended to contest an MCA seat and wanted an audience with the President.
He reportedly told journalists that he had no harmful intentions.
Following the incident, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja ordered an inquiry to establish how the man managed to breach security layers surrounding the President.
The National Police Service emphasized that at no time was the President’s safety compromised and praised the professionalism and speed of the security officers.
The investigation is expected to review procedural gaps and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents during future presidential events.
Security around the President is typically extremely tight, involving elite protection units trained to react instantly to any perceived threat.
Even brief breaches are taken seriously because they expose potential weaknesses in crowd control or access management during large public gatherings.
