Kenyan Businesswoman Launches Airline Named After Raila Odinga

Kenyan Businesswoman Unveils Plan to Launch ‘Raila Airways’ in Honour of Raila Odinga

A Kenyan businesswoman has revealed bold plans to start a new international airline that will carry the name of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The project, which is still in its early stages, has already generated widespread discussion both in Kenya and abroad.

Sheila Mutundi, a Kenyan model and entrepreneur currently based in Singapore, shared the details in an exclusive interview with Newshub.co.ke. She announced that the airline, to be known as “Raila Airways,” is already under development and is expected to be officially unveiled in the coming weeks.

According to Mutundi, the decision to name the airline after Raila was deliberate and deeply personal. She explained that the name was chosen as a tribute to honour his legacy and ensure that his impact continues to be remembered for generations to come.

She described the project as a combination of admiration for the former Prime Minister and her own long-term entrepreneurial vision.

Mutundi further disclosed that the airline is projected to begin operations in 2026. Unlike many new carriers that focus on domestic routes first, Raila Airways intends to operate international flights from the start.

One of the key routes being considered is a direct connection between Malaysia and Kenya, a move she believes could strengthen travel and business ties between the two regions.

Responding to critics who have questioned whether the announcement is simply a publicity stunt, Mutundi firmly dismissed such claims.

She emphasized that the airline is a serious, long-term investment and is currently in its preparation and development phase. Planning, partnerships, and operational groundwork are already underway to ensure the airline meets international aviation standards before launch.

Speaking passionately about the inspiration behind the name, Mutundi described Raila as an iconic and extraordinary leader whose influence went beyond politics. She said his name deserves global recognition and should be associated with major achievements and respected institutions around the world.

When asked about the financial backing behind such an ambitious venture, Mutundi revealed that the airline already has support from both local and international investors who are actively involved in its development.

However, she noted that the project remains open to additional partnerships as it moves closer to its launch date.

She expressed confidence that the investment structure in place is strong enough to support the airline’s long-term growth and sustainability.

Images and promotional videos shared online show early concepts of the airline’s branding. The aircraft interiors appear to feature the initials “R A O,” while seat-back screens display the name “Raila Airways.” The branding suggests a carefully designed identity meant to reflect both professionalism and tribute.

Addressing concerns about political bias, Mutundi clarified that although the airline carries Raila’s name, it will not be politically affiliated.

She stressed that the business is independent and focused purely on aviation and international travel. According to her, the name represents honour and recognition, not political alignment.

Mutundi has previously been in the public spotlight after she was seen in Bali alongside George Ruto, the son of President William Samoei Ruto. However, she has continued to focus on her business ambitions and expanding her international profile.

Her personal journey to entrepreneurship is one she describes as deeply inspiring. Mutundi revealed that she comes from very humble beginnings.

Her mother sold illicit brew, commonly known as chang’aa, while her father worked as a security guard to support the family. Despite facing financial challenges growing up, she remained determined to change her circumstances.

Through hard work and persistence, she says she was able to transform her family’s fortunes. One of her proudest achievements, she shared, was building her parents a beautiful home — a symbol of how far she had come.

Today, Mutundi frequently travels to global destinations such as Santorini, Vietnam, and Bali, reflecting the success she has built for herself.

With Raila Airways now in development, Mutundi hopes to make a significant mark in the aviation industry while honouring a name she believes carries historical and national importance.

If her plans move forward as announced, the airline could become one of the most talked-about new carriers linking Kenya to the world.
