Atwoli Re-Elected as COTU Secretary General for Sixth Term
Francis Atwoli has once again secured his position as the Secretary General of Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU-K), extending his long-standing leadership of the country’s largest workers’ body.
His re-election took place during a delegates’ conference held on Saturday, March 14, at the Tom Mboya Labour College, where hundreds of union representatives gathered for the important event.
Atwoli, who has been at the helm of COTU-K since 2001, will now serve his sixth term in office. His continued stay in power reflects both his influence and experience within Kenya’s labour movement.
The election process saw participation from at least 250 delegates representing 47 affiliated trade unions, showing the wide representation of workers from different sectors across the country.
Notably, Atwoli was re-elected unopposed, meaning no other candidate stepped forward to challenge him for the position.
This outcome effectively gave him a smooth path to retain his seat for another five-year term. The atmosphere at the venue quickly turned celebratory after the announcement, with delegates reportedly breaking into song and dance, signaling strong support and unity among those in attendance.
Over the years, Atwoli has remained a key voice in championing workers’ rights, often pushing for better pay, improved working conditions, and stronger collective bargaining agreements.
His role has not only shaped labour relations within Kenya but has also influenced trade union movements across the wider East African region.
However, his leadership has not been without criticism. In recent months, some voices within and outside the labour movement have called for change at the top of COTU-K.
Critics argue that after more than two decades in leadership, there is a need for fresh ideas, new leadership styles, and a more modern approach to addressing workers’ challenges in a rapidly changing economic environment.
During his acceptance speech, Atwoli expressed gratitude to the delegates for renewing their trust in him. He described his re-election as a clear sign of confidence from union members and promised to continue defending and advancing the rights and welfare of workers.
He emphasized the importance of unity within the labour movement as the country faces growing economic challenges.
Supporters of Atwoli, on the other hand, strongly defended his re-election, pointing to his vast experience and proven track record.
They believe his deep understanding of labour issues and long-standing involvement in union matters make him the right person to continue steering the organization during difficult times.
His new term begins at a critical period when many Kenyan workers are grappling with rising costs of living, limited job opportunities, and economic uncertainty.
Issues such as youth unemployment, job insecurity, and fair wages remain major concerns that COTU-K will be expected to address under his leadership.
As Atwoli embarks on yet another term, attention will now shift to how effectively he and his team will respond to these pressing labour issues.
Many Kenyans will be watching closely to see whether his continued leadership will bring meaningful change and solutions, especially for young people struggling to secure stable employment in today’s challenging economy.
