Breaking: Four Killed, Many Injured in Tragic Road Crash Near Dedan Kimathi University

A tragic road accident along the Nyeri–Nyahururu Road near Dedan Kimathi University of Technology on Saturday, March 28, has left at least four people dead and several others seriously injured, in an incident that has shocked residents and road users in the area.

The accident was confirmed by the Nyeri Traffic Commander, who stated that emergency response teams moved quickly to the scene to assist the victims.

Those who sustained injuries were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care, with some reported to be in critical condition.

Early reports circulating shortly after the crash had indicated that as many as 10 people had died. However, authorities later clarified the situation, confirming that four fatalities had been recorded at the scene, while efforts continued to account for all those involved.

Preliminary findings show that the accident involved a truck transporting tree stems and heavy logs and a public service vehicle (PSV) matatu that was carrying passengers.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck is believed to have lost control before overturning. In the process, it crashed directly into the matatu, causing extensive damage. The impact was so severe that the PSV driver is said to have died instantly.

Emergency teams from the Nyeri County Government, operating under the Disaster Risk Management Directorate, were quickly dispatched to the scene to lead rescue operations.

Officials confirmed that their teams were actively working to manage the situation and assist victims. Rescue efforts were still ongoing as responders worked tirelessly to reach those trapped inside the wreckage.

The crash left a trail of destruction, with both vehicles badly damaged. Images and videos seen by Newshub.co.ke revealed the horrifying extent of the accident.

The matatu’s upper section was completely crushed, leaving some passengers trapped inside the twisted metal.

Rescue teams were forced to use specialized equipment, including metal grinders, to cut through the wreckage and free survivors.

A large crowd gathered at the scene as emergency responders, traffic police, and well-wishers coordinated rescue efforts.

The situation remained tense as rescuers worked against time to save lives and clear the scene.

Locals say the stretch of road where the accident occurred is particularly dangerous. The narrow section handles heavy traffic daily, especially between Nyeri town and Nyahururu, and has been the site of multiple accidents in the past.

Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about safety along this route, calling for urgent measures to prevent such tragedies.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and traffic police highlights the growing concern over road safety in the country.

In January alone, 398 Kenyans lost their lives in road accidents, underlining the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and improved road safety measures.

Authorities are continuing with investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident, even as rescue operations and support for victims and their families continue.
