Sonko to Sell Multimillion-Shilling Club in Mombasa
Former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, has revealed plans to sell his multimillion-shilling nightclub, Club Volume VIP, in Mombasa as he embraces a new spiritual journey.
In a post on X dated April 2, Sonko shared that he has developed a closer relationship with God, and this transformation has influenced his decision to exit the alcohol business entirely, citing a conflict between his values and the nature of the venture.
“Since choosing to leave alcohol and draw closer to God, I have made a firm decision to exit the alcohol business completely,” Sonko stated.
He further explained that his exit strategy involves either selling or leasing the club or even donating the entire stock of alcohol, signaling a significant new chapter in his life.
“I will sell or lease the VIP Club or give away all alcohol stock. This marks a new chapter in my life,” he emphasized.
Accompanying the post was a 24-minute video in which Sonko toured the club. During the visit, he casually mentioned that the business could generate Ksh30 million or more over a single weekend, a claim that left many netizens surprised and curious.
Club Volume VIP is designed with a luxurious, multi-level layout that includes four to five bars. The venue is enhanced with vibrant blue LED lighting, giving it an upscale, energetic nightlife vibe.
Each room features high-end finishes such as black granite countertops, vessel sinks, gold geometric wall panels, backlit mirrors, and pristine white tile flooring, reflecting a sophisticated and modern aesthetic.
Reactions from netizens were mixed. Some praised Sonko for his spiritual decision and journey, while others expressed skepticism over the sale of such a high-value business.
One netizen remarked, “In Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Sonko has reached self-actualization. He realizes all these material things are vanity. A true connection with God is enough.”
Another shared their admiration, saying, “This is so inspiring. If someone can leave alcohol despite all the wealth they have, then I have no excuse not to continue my own journey of sobriety. I’m just one month into my sobriety journey.”
However, others questioned the source of Sonko’s wealth, pointing to the corruption allegations that marked his tenure as governor, which ultimately led to his impeachment on December 3, 2020.
Adding a layer of intrigue, one netizen noted that the footage of the club tour appeared to have been recorded on April 1—April Fool’s Day—raising suspicions that Sonko might be joking with his followers.
