President Ruto Promises Stronger Support for Boxing After Majembe’s Victory Over ‘Mbavu Destroyer’
President William Ruto has reaffirmed his commitment to promoting boxing in Kenya following a thrilling victory by amateur sensation Portifas Odipo, popularly known as Majembe, over Ferdinand Omondi, famously nicknamed Mbavu Destroyer, in the highly anticipated Vurugu Championship bout.
In a post on X on April 5, President Ruto congratulated both fighters, describing their performance as electrifying and praising how the match kept fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
The President highlighted that the duel had lived up to the immense hype surrounding it, delivering excitement to boxing fans across the nation.
“Congratulations, Majembe (Portifas Odipo), on your impressive victory against Mbavu Destroyer (Ferdinand Omondi) in yesterday’s Vurugu Championship.
Both of you delivered a spirited and entertaining fight, keeping everyone watching captivated until the very end,” President Ruto said.
He also acknowledged that the closely contested match rekindled nationwide interest in boxing, restoring hope and excitement in a sport that had struggled to maintain its previous popularity.
Building on this momentum, President Ruto pledged that his government would actively support and invest in boxing to help the sport reach new heights.
“We are committed to sustaining this enthusiasm by supporting talent development, investing in athletes, and creating more opportunities to grow boxing across the country,” he added.
This promise follows an earlier commitment by the President before the fight, in which he pledged Ksh1 million to the winner through Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o.
The championship match took place on April 4 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi and ended in the fourth round when Mbavu Destroyer was unable to continue, resulting in a technical knockout for Majembe.
Prior to the stoppage, Majembe had been leading on points, although some spectators raised concerns over a late blow that appeared to land below the belt.
Mbavu Destroyer had gained national fame through the viral “Weka Mawe” slogan, which significantly boosted his popularity ahead of the fight.
Majembe, meanwhile, brought his own social media-driven following into the ring, and his victory has firmly established him as a fan favorite, not just online but among general sports enthusiasts.
The fight drew huge viewership both in the arena and online, demonstrating the immense public interest in grassroots sports entertainment in Kenya. Fans nationwide followed the match closely, celebrating every punch, round, and turning point in real time.
President Ruto has consistently prioritized sports development across Kenya, investing heavily in infrastructure and grassroots programs.
Plans include the construction of 22 new stadiums and 30 football academies nationwide, with the 60,000-seat Talanta Sports City Stadium scheduled for completion before the Confederation of African Football (CAF) deadline in July this year.
Athlete welfare has also received a significant boost under his administration, with daily allowances increased from Ksh7,500 to Ksh26,000, gold medal bonuses raised to Ksh3 million, and government-subsidized housing provided for 2025 championship medallists.
In addition to these efforts, Kenya hosted the CHAN championships in collaboration with Tanzania and Uganda last year. Looking ahead, the FIFA Series Championships for women are set to be held at Nyayo Stadium this month as part of preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.
These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to positioning Kenya as a key player in both national and international sports arenas, with boxing now receiving renewed attention and support from the highest levels of government.
The match between Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer has not only showcased local talent but also reignited hope for the growth of boxing in Kenya, proving that with the right backing, grassroots sports can capture the hearts of millions and create opportunities for future champions.
