Ruto and Gachagua Face Off at Kiaraho Burial as Political Tension Boils Over
A dramatic political moment unfolded in Nyandarua after President William Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua shared the same platform during memorial and burial events for late Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho.
The two leaders, once close allies, came face to face for the first time in a highly charged public setting, turning what was meant to be a solemn send-off into a powerful political spectacle.
Reports from the ground indicated that tension had been building for days, with both camps mobilising supporters ahead of the burial.
Gachagua used the burial event to send a sharp message over the growing succession politics in Ol Kalou.
Speaking during his visit to the late MP’s family earlier in the week, he strongly criticised leaders who had already started discussing the by-election before Kiaraho was laid to rest. He said such talk goes against Kikuyu traditions and amounts to disrespecting the dead.
In what many observers saw as an indirect attack on President Ruto’s camp, Gachagua also took issue with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s earlier remarks on the expected by-election, insisting that culture and respect must come first before politics. The statement added more heat to an already tense atmosphere surrounding the burial ceremony.
The memorial service itself had been widely viewed as a looming showdown between the two leaders, especially because Nyandarua is increasingly becoming a symbolic battleground in the larger Mt Kenya power struggle ahead of 2027.
Political analysts now see the Ol Kalou seat as a key test of who truly controls the region’s grassroots politics.
Although some online headlines claimed that “Ruto was left in shock,” credible reporting shows the bigger story was the symbolism of the two leaders sharing a podium amid deep political differences.
The burial became more than a moment of mourning—it exposed the widening cracks in Kenya Kwanza’s former top leadership and signalled that the battle for Mt Kenya influence is far from over.
