DCI Reveals Suspects Behind Attack on Senator Osotsi

DCI Arrests Three Suspects Over Attack on Senator Godfrey Osotsi

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of three suspects linked to the shocking attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu on Wednesday, April 8.

In a statement released on Thursday, April 9, the DCI said the three suspects were arrested following swift investigations by detectives based in Kisumu County.

According to the agency, the suspects are from the Nyalenda and Manyatta areas of Kisumu County and are believed to have played a direct role in the violent incident.

The three suspects, aged 24, 39, and 27, are accused of taking part in the attack that happened at Java House located inside West End Mall in Kisumu.

The incident, which caused public outrage and drew condemnation from leaders across the political divide, has now become the focus of an intensified investigation.

“Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kisumu County have arrested three suspects in connection with the attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi at Java House, West End Mall,” the DCI said in its statement.

At the same time, the agency revealed that the three arrests are only part of a wider crackdown, adding that more suspects connected to the attack are still being pursued.

Detectives said investigations have been expanded, with efforts now focused on identifying and apprehending every individual involved in the incident.

The DCI also thanked members of the public who have already come forward with important information that has helped move the investigation forward.

The agency further urged Kenyans to continue cooperating with detectives to ensure all those behind the attack are brought to justice.

“DCI thanks members of the public who have volunteered useful information to aid the ongoing investigations and urges continued cooperation as detectives work to bring all perpetrators to justice,” the statement added.

The arrests came shortly after political leaders allied to Senator Osotsi sharply criticised law enforcement agencies, accusing them of failing to act quickly against the attackers.

The leaders had raised concerns over what they described as delayed police action in bringing the perpetrators to book.

Senator Osotsi was attacked on Wednesday, April 8, by a group of youths while at the mall. CCTV footage from the scene showed the senator being overwhelmed by several attackers, who pinned him to the ground as more individuals surrounded him from all sides.

The disturbing footage quickly spread online, sparking anger and concern among supporters and leaders.

After the assault, the senator was rushed for emergency medical attention before being airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

Before news of the arrests emerged on Thursday, opposition leaders had already piled pressure on the government, with some calling for the resignation of Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.

The leaders issued a 24-hour ultimatum, warning that failure to step down would lead to private prosecution proceedings.

They accused the PS of allegedly being behind the organisation of the youths who attacked the senator, claims that have further heightened the political tension surrounding the incident.

“Raymond Omollo should immediately resign. We demand that he resign immediately, and we are giving him up to tomorrow. Raymond Omollo’s name is plainly placed before Kenyans, and these are his goons,” said Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Meanwhile, ODM party leaders also strongly condemned the attack, terming it a dangerous and shameful act that goes against the country’s democratic values and peaceful political culture.

In a statement issued by acting Secretary General Catherine Omondi, the party described the assault as archaic, barbaric, and a major step backward for a nation that prides itself on peace, rule of law, and political tolerance.

“The ODM party wishes to condemn in the strongest terms possible the attack and the eventual assault on Senator Godfrey Osotsi by armed goons in broad daylight at a Kisumu restaurant. This is clearly a criminal act,” the party stated.

The incident continues to attract national attention, with many now waiting to see whether more arrests will follow as detectives widen the investigation.
