Mystery Deepens After Man Dies in Fall From KICC Rooftop
Police in Nairobi have launched investigations after a young man died following a tragic fall from the upper section of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in the city centre.
The incident, which happened at around 11am, caused panic and briefly disrupted normal activities at the busy facility as officers moved in to secure the scene.
The victim, believed to be in his 20s, is reported to have fallen from the helipad area at the top of the iconic building before landing near the ground-floor entrance.
The shocking incident quickly drew the attention of members of the public and workers around the area, many of whom gathered outside KICC as emergency responders and police officers rushed to the scene.
Eyewitnesses who were at the scene said the man may have jumped from the rooftop section of the building, although investigators are yet to confirm exactly what happened.
Police have remained cautious, saying they are still piecing together the events that led to the fatal fall and cannot yet rely on witness claims alone until all evidence is reviewed.
Central Police Commander Stephene Nyakombo confirmed the incident and said detectives are working to establish the man’s identity, his movements before the fall, and the exact point from which he fell.
He noted that investigators are also trying to understand the motive behind the incident and whether the deceased had been alone before accessing the upper floors.
“We are yet to know more on the incident, including his motive and where he was prior to the fall,” Nyakombo said.
Soon after the incident, the area around the main KICC entrance was cordoned off to allow forensic experts and crime scene officers to collect evidence without interference.
Detectives carefully documented the scene, took photographs, and recorded witness statements as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The body was later moved to the City Mortuary, where it awaits formal identification and a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Because KICC is fitted with extensive surveillance cameras across its floors, staircases, and rooftop access points, police are expected to rely heavily on CCTV footage to trace the man’s final movements.
Investigators are also likely to interview security guards, reception staff, and anyone who may have interacted with him before the incident to determine how he gained access to the upper levels of the building.
This is not the first time KICC has been linked to a similar tragedy. In December 2024, another man reportedly died instantly after falling from the 10th floor of the same building. Reports at the time indicated that he had used a lift to access the upper floors before the fatal incident.
That case came barely weeks after an earlier tragedy in November 2024, when a young woman identified as Lucy also lost her life after jumping from the 14th floor while attending an exposition at the venue.
The repeated incidents have once again raised fresh questions about access control, rooftop security, and mental health support in public buildings, especially in major landmarks that receive hundreds of visitors every day.
As investigations continue, many Nairobi residents are now waiting for authorities to release CCTV findings and establish the full truth behind the latest heartbreaking incident.
