Chaos erupted across several Nairobi estates after heavy overnight rainfall triggered widespread flooding, leaving major roads underwater and many neighbourhoods difficult to access from Monday night through Tuesday morning.
Photos and videos reviewed by Kenyans.co.ke showed that some of the worst-hit areas included Utawala, the Ruai Bypass, and Kariokor Roundabout, where floodwaters covered roads and disrupted movement.
The rising water greatly affected normal transport operations, with many commuters stranded as vehicles could not pass through flooded sections. Public transport was interrupted in several places, forcing passengers to wait for hours or seek alternative routes.
In Utawala, residents woke up to a swollen stream that had overflowed its banks and spread into nearby homes. The strong currents swept away gates, damaged access roads, and flowed into residential compounds.
Videos from the area captured fast-moving water rushing across streets and surrounding houses early Tuesday morning.
Along the Ruai Bypass near the Kangundo Road junction, large parts of the road were submerged, causing severe traffic congestion. Some vehicles stalled in the water while travellers were left stranded as movement slowed to a standstill.
A similar situation was reported at Kariokor Roundabout near Riverside, where roads were flooded after drainage systems failed to handle the heavy downpour. Residents also complained that raw sewage mixed with the floodwaters, creating an unpleasant and unsafe environment.
Pedestrians moving near Kariokor Market, especially around the junction connecting General Waruinge Street and Ring Road Ngara, were forced to jump over dirty water while passing vehicles splashed sewage-contaminated water onto those walking by the roadside.
In other parts of the city, sections of Seasons Road heading toward Clay City also became impassable after being covered by floodwaters, further worsening transport challenges for motorists and residents.
The early Tuesday disruptions followed intense rainfall that pounded Nairobi throughout Monday night. This came as the Kenya Meteorological Service warned that more rain is expected in Nairobi and many other counties during the week.
According to the weather forecast, heavy rainfall is likely to continue in Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu, Kakamega, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Turkana, and Marsabit.
The latest flooding comes only weeks after previous rains caused major destruction in the capital, damaging property worth millions of shillings and resulting in loss of lives.
