Police Arrest Woman After Death of Nairobi Hospital Doctor Dr Job Obwaka

Police have made a breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the sudden death of veteran gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka, a well-known doctor who worked at Nairobi Hospital, after arresting a 45-year-old woman who was reportedly the last person seen with him before he collapsed.

The woman, who is believed to be a business associate of the 83-year-old doctor, was taken into custody on Saturday morning.

Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are now treating her as a key person of interest as they try to reconstruct the events leading up to the doctor’s death.

According to preliminary police findings, Dr Obwaka had travelled to Kitengela for personal errands when he suddenly fell ill while in the company of the arrested woman.

It is reported that the two were together during the incident, and this detail has become central to the investigation as detectives work to understand what exactly happened in his final hours.

An official report filed at Kilimani Police Station states that the doctor was quickly rushed to Nairobi Hospital by ambulance after collapsing. However, upon arrival at the facility, medical staff confirmed that he had already passed away.

Hospital officials indicated that although Dr Obwaka had known underlying health conditions, the exact cause of death has not yet been determined. Police have emphasized that it is still too early to conclude what led to his sudden collapse, and a full investigation is underway.

The body of the late doctor was moved to Lee Funeral Home, where a postmortem examination is expected to be conducted to provide clearer answers regarding the cause of death.

Investigators have also documented and processed the scene where he collapsed as part of standard procedure.

The arrested woman is currently being held as inquiries continue, with police maintaining that the case is still “under investigation” and no final conclusions have been reached.

Dr Obwaka’s death has caused deep concern within Kenya’s medical community. He was widely respected for his long career in women’s health and for his leadership role at Nairobi Hospital, where he served for many years as a senior specialist.

His passing comes only weeks after he was in the public spotlight following reports of his arrest alongside other hospital directors over internal governance disputes at Nairobi Hospital.

That earlier incident had sparked debate in the medical sector, including reactions from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), which had raised concerns about the handling of the matter.

As investigations continue, authorities say they are keeping all possibilities open while awaiting forensic results that may shed light on the exact cause of Dr Obwaka’s death.
