Tragedy in Rongai: Parliament Chef Stabbed to Death in Domestic Dispute

Kajiado County is in shock following a tragic incident that led to the death of a 53-year-old chef working at the National Assembly, identified as Mungai Gathogo.

Police reports indicate that the respected chef was allegedly stabbed to death in his home in Ongata Rongai after a domestic disagreement that turned violent.

Authorities say the main suspect in the case is his 31-year-old girlfriend, Catherine Muthoki, who has already been arrested and placed in custody at Rongai Police Station as she awaits arraignment in court.

Investigators believe the two were involved in a heated argument that escalated inside the house, ending in a fatal stabbing.

According to Ongata Rongai Sub-county Police Commander Benjamin Kiprono, early findings show that the suspect visited the deceased at his residence on the night of the incident.

During the confrontation, a kitchen knife—reportedly picked from within the house—was allegedly used in the attack.

“It was just a disagreement that escalated. There was a single stab wound on the left side of the chest, which likely affected a vital organ,” Kiprono explained, adding that the injury proved fatal despite efforts to save the victim.

Witness Accounts and What Happened Before the Attack

Neighbours and security personnel have given accounts that help piece together the moments leading up to the tragedy. One of the guards on duty, Dennis Juma, said he saw Mungai arrive home with the woman on the evening of the incident.

He noted that the chef had been living alone for over a year before the girlfriend moved in recently, approximately three weeks before the incident.

Juma explained that everything initially appeared normal when the couple entered the house. However, shortly after, unusual noise was heard coming from inside the residence, raising concern.

Moments later, the woman was seen leaving the house in a hurry. She later returned about 30 minutes later and approached the gate again. According to Juma, she appeared distressed and informed him that something serious had happened inside.

“When I asked her to confirm from him, she said he had already been stabbed and there was no need to waste time,” Juma recounted, noting that her reaction immediately raised alarm.

Neighbours Discover the Shocking Scene

The situation quickly escalated when female companions of Mungai forced their way into the house after hearing the distressing news. What they found was a horrifying scene that left the entire neighbourhood in shock.

Neighbours who rushed to the scene described finding Mungai lying motionless, heavily bleeding, and lying face down. He had suffered severe injuries and was unable to speak or call for help at that point.

Emergency efforts were made immediately, and he was rushed to Sinai Hospital in Ongata Rongai. However, due to the severity of his condition, he was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors there pronounced him dead on arrival.

A neighbour described the scene as deeply disturbing, noting that the amount of blood and the condition in which he was found showed how serious the attack had been.

Ongoing Investigation and Legal Process

Police have confirmed that investigations into the murder are ongoing as they work to establish the exact circumstances that led to the fatal stabbing.

They are also examining the nature of the relationship between the deceased and the suspect, as well as what may have triggered the violent confrontation.

The suspect, Catherine Muthoki, remains in custody at Rongai Police Station and is expected to be presented in court on Monday, May 4. Authorities say she will face murder-related charges as the case proceeds through the justice system.

Meanwhile, the death of Mungai Gathogo has left colleagues at Parliament and members of the public in deep mourning, with many describing him as a dedicated professional who had served in the national institution for years.

As investigations continue, police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward to assist in building a clearer picture of what transpired on that tragic night in Rongai.
