Chaos in Marurui as Protesters Clash With Police, Demand Ruto’s Intervention
Tension gripped Marurui in Nairobi’s Kasarani area after angry residents staged protests over an alleged land grabbing dispute, leading to running battles with police and the temporary paralysis of transport along the busy Northern Bypass.
The demonstrations erupted after squatters occupying the disputed land accused a private developer of attempting to evict them from property they claim to have lived on for decades.
Protesters blocked roads using huge tree trunks, burning tyres, and stones, causing major traffic disruption in the area.
Videos circulating online showed dramatic scenes as anti-riot police confronted protesters who refused to leave the roads.
Some residents were heard accusing authorities of siding with powerful individuals linked to the contested land.
In one of the most emotional moments during the protests, a furious resident nearly attempted to make a direct phone call to President William Ruto after a heated confrontation with police officers.
The resident insisted that only the Head of State could intervene and stop what they described as injustice against long-time squatters.
Witnesses at the scene said emotions ran high as residents claimed they had nowhere else to go if removed from the land. One protester stated that generations of their family had lived in Marurui and accused influential figures of trying to force them out.
The protesters also called upon Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and President Ruto to step in and resolve the matter before the situation escalates further.
Marurui has experienced several land disputes over the years, with multiple sections remaining under court battles involving private developers, squatters, and government agencies.
According to reports, thousands of residents have occupied parts of the land for more than two decades.
Police remained deployed in the area as authorities monitored the protests to prevent further destruction and unrest.
