IG Kanja Orders Investigation Into Violent Arrest of Disabled Protester Following Public Outrage
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered an immediate investigation into the violent arrest of a physically challenged protester in Nakuru after a disturbing video of the incident sparked widespread anger among Kenyans.
In a statement released on Friday, June 26, the National Police Service (NPS) strongly condemned the actions of the officers involved, saying the conduct seen in the viral video appeared to go against the Service’s Standard Operating Procedures and the professional standards expected of police officers while carrying out their duties.
The police service emphasized that it does not tolerate excessive use of force or any actions that violate established policing guidelines.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting human rights, maintaining professionalism, and ensuring that officers treat all members of the public with dignity and respect regardless of the circumstances.
According to the National Police Service, preliminary reports show that the incident took place on Thursday, June 25, in Nakuru during demonstrations held to commemorate victims of the 2024 Anti-Finance Bill protests.
The demonstrations were part of nationwide events where Kenyans gathered to remember those who lost their lives during last year’s protests.
Following the public backlash, Inspector General Kanja instructed the Internal Affairs Unit to launch a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation into the incident. He directed the unit to complete the inquiry and submit a detailed report within seven days.
The police service stated that appropriate disciplinary or legal action would be taken against those found responsible once the investigation is completed and the findings are reviewed.
“The Inspector General has directed the Internal Affairs Unit to conduct a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation into the matter within seven days. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” the statement from the National Police Service said.
Kanja’s directive comes after the police faced heavy criticism from Kenyans across social media and human rights groups following the circulation of a video showing officers using force while arresting a disabled man who depends on crutches to move around.
The widely shared footage shows the man attempting to cross a road with the assistance of another individual after police officers had set up barricades during the demonstrations.
The pair appeared to be trying to make their way through the area before officers suddenly moved in.
Moments later, a police Land Cruiser carrying more than ten armed officers is seen arriving at high speed. The officers quickly jump out of the vehicle carrying firearms, batons, and tear gas launchers before rushing toward the two men.
The driver of the police vehicle is seen leading the pursuit while the other officers closely follow behind. As the officers approached, the man assisting the disabled protester managed to run away and escape from the scene, leaving the physically challenged man behind.
Because of his disability, the protester was unable to flee from the advancing officers. In an attempt to escape, he dropped his crutches and fell onto the road.
The officers then surrounded him before dragging him across the tarmac and forcefully lifting him into the waiting police vehicle as captured in the viral video.
The images and video of the arrest quickly spread across social media platforms, triggering widespread condemnation from many Kenyans. Numerous people accused the officers of using unnecessary and excessive force against a vulnerable person who posed little or no threat.
Many online users questioned why such force was used against a man with a physical disability, with others calling for accountability and disciplinary action against the officers involved.
Human rights advocates also urged the police leadership to ensure justice is served and that similar incidents do not happen again.
While condemning the officers’ conduct, the National Police Service also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with investigators.
The Service encouraged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could help establish exactly what happened to come forward and share it with the Internal Affairs Unit as investigations continue.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether the officers violated police procedures and whether disciplinary or legal action will be taken against those found responsible for the controversial arrest.
