Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced a new round of appointments and reappointments affecting the leadership of eight public universities across Kenya.
The latest changes, published in a Gazette Notice dated June 26, are aimed at strengthening the governance of the institutions through new council appointments and the renewal of existing members’ terms.
The appointments touch on the governing councils of Maasai Mara University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), Pwani University, Kisii University, Turkana University, and Chuka University. Most of the appointments are for a period of three years.
At Maasai Mara University, Professor Geoffrey Ole Maloiy has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the University Council.
He will serve for a three-year term and is expected to provide strategic leadership to the institution’s governing body. In addition, Millicent Leila Lenguris has been appointed as a new member of the council.
The Cabinet Secretary also renewed the appointments of several council members at the Narok-based university. Susan Chebet, Elizabeth Ayoo, Dickson Malanga Shikanga, and Agnes Busienei have all been reappointed and will continue serving on the university council for another three years.
Their reappointments are expected to ensure continuity in the management and oversight of the university’s affairs.
At Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Joel Yego and Velma Mudanyi Mudasa have both been reappointed as members of the university council.
Their continued service reflects the government’s confidence in their contribution to the institution’s governance and decision-making processes.
Similarly, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) has retained several members of its governing council.
Those reappointed include David Oyugi, Joan Odawa, Ambassador Ambeyi Ligavo, Isaac Kiprop Chebon, and Willis Gesami Omwoyo. They will continue serving in their respective positions as the university seeks to strengthen its leadership and institutional development.
At South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), Esther Wanjiru has also secured another three-year term as a member of the university council. Her reappointment ensures continuity in the university’s governance and administration.
In the Coast region, Pwani University has also experienced leadership renewals. Professor Mohamed Salim Badamana has been reappointed as the Chairperson of the University Council for another three years.
He will continue working alongside Ambassador Benjamin Mweri, Sang David, Fatma Mohammed, and Japhet Mvoyi Ria, who have all been reappointed as council members to continue supporting the institution’s governance.
At Kisii University, Sara Ruto has retained her position as the Chairperson of the University Council following her reappointment.
At the same time, Samson Muchelule has also been reappointed as a council member and will continue serving in the university’s leadership structure.
In the Rift Valley region, Turkana University will continue under the leadership of Peter Ndemo, who has been reappointed as the Chairperson of the University Council.
Other council members who have retained their positions include Jared Oyier, Shadrack Kemoi, Kimutai Biwott, and Carolyne Ekwon. The renewed appointments are expected to support the university’s ongoing growth and governance agenda.
Meanwhile, Chuka University has also maintained much of its existing leadership. Professor David Serem has been reappointed as the Chairperson of the University Council.
He will continue serving together with Crispus Ndeke, Linet Maganda, Samuel Gitonga, Zephania Mbaka, and Margaret Makhungu, who have all retained their positions as council members.
The appointments are part of the government’s continued efforts to ensure stable leadership and effective governance across public universities.
University councils play a key role in providing policy direction, overseeing financial management, and supporting institutional development, making these appointments important for the smooth running of the institutions.
In separate government appointments announced at the same time, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi reappointed Nicholas Kamuya Ng’arua as a member of the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) board.
He also renewed the appointments of four other members to the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) board, further strengthening leadership in key financial sector institutions.
