Senior Citizen TV Journalist Resigns to Pursue Malava MP Seat

Senior Citizen TV journalist John Wanyama has resigned from Royal Media Services (RMS) as he prepares to enter politics and contest for the Malava parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.

Wanyama, who was working as a reporter based in Eldoret, officially submitted his resignation on July 3, 2026. In his resignation letter, he gave the media company a one-month notice, meaning his final day at RMS was set for August 4, 2026.

The journalist said he had made the decision after careful consideration and wanted to take a new direction in his career by joining public service. He confirmed that he intends to seek election as the Member of Parliament for Malava Constituency in the upcoming 2027 polls.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to resign from my position to pursue a new path in public service by vying for the position of Member of Parliament for Malava Constituency,” Wanyama stated in his resignation letter.

Wanyama described his departure from journalism as the beginning of a new chapter in his life. After spending many years reporting on different issues affecting Kenyans, particularly in the Rift Valley region, he said he now wants to serve the community from a different platform.

Wanyama’s Long Career at Citizen TV

Wanyama joined Royal Media Services in 2013, beginning a journalism journey that would see him spend more than a decade working with one of Kenya’s leading media companies.

During his years at the media house, he covered a wide range of stories across the larger Rift Valley region. His work involved reporting on politics, security, development, local affairs and other important issues affecting residents.

He was based in Eldoret at the time he left the company, where he had continued carrying out his reporting duties before deciding to make the transition into politics.

In his resignation letter, Wanyama expressed appreciation to his colleagues and the management of RMS for the support, guidance and opportunities he received throughout his time at the company.

The journalist also recognized the role played by the company’s leadership in his professional development. He specifically thanked RMS owner S.K. Macharia and Managing Director Wachira Waruru, whom he credited for their leadership, guidance and mentorship during his years at the media organization.

Wanyama further assured the company that he would make the transition as smooth as possible during his notice period. He said he would complete any pending assignments, hand over his responsibilities and return all company equipment before officially leaving the organization.

RMS Accepts His Resignation

Royal Media Services formally accepted Wanyama’s resignation in a letter dated July 14, 2026.

The company confirmed that his final working day would be August 4, 2026, effectively bringing his long career at RMS to an end.

RMS also instructed the journalist to complete the required staff clearance procedures before leaving the company. He was expected to hand over his duties, return company property and clear any outstanding liabilities before receiving his terminal dues.

His resignation now clears the way for Wanyama to fully focus on his political ambitions as the country gradually moves closer to the 2027 General Election.

Malava Race Begins to Take Shape

Wanyama’s entry into the Malava parliamentary race comes at a time when politicians and potential candidates are already beginning to position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Malava seat is expected to attract a competitive field, with several politicians already showing interest in succeeding the current leadership.

Among those linked to the race is Seth Panyako, a prominent politician associated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Wanyama’s decision to leave journalism and seek elective office also places him among a growing number of Kenyan media personalities who have moved from the newsroom into politics.

Over the years, several well-known journalists and media personalities have made similar transitions, including Citizen TV’s Trevor Ombija, Stephen Letoo, Willis Raburu and Tina Ogal.

Wanyama’s move is therefore another example of journalists using their years of experience in public affairs, community engagement and communication as they seek to take on political and public-service roles.

With the 2027 elections approaching, his resignation marks the beginning of a new political journey, and attention will now turn to how he performs as he seeks to convince Malava residents to support his bid for Parliament.
