Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been impeached by the Meru County Assembly for the third time in the past two years.
On Thursday, 49 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favor of her removal.
Following the impeachment, the atmosphere at the assembly was jubilant.
MCAs were seen celebrating and singing a song with the lyrics, “Tutavua mapambo yetu”.
The song, which became a symbol of their triumph, was accompanied by cheers and festivities among the assembly members.
The impeachment motion, which was moved by Zipporah Kinya, the Deputy Majority Leader, cited three main grounds for the governor’s ouster: gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.
Despite the significant majority, 17 MCAs opposed the motion, and three abstained from voting.
Ahead of the vote, security was significantly tightened around the Meru County Assembly due to concerns of potential violence.
A large police contingent, led by the North Imenti Sub County Police Commander, was deployed to prevent any disruptions after reports suggested that goons might attempt to invade and torch the assembly premises.
During the night, there were gunshots as some individuals tried to force their way into the assembly, but they were repelled by the heavy police presence.
This latest impeachment marks the third attempt to remove Governor Mwangaza from office, with a total of five attempts having been made during her tenure.
Earlier this week, a prior impeachment motion was withdrawn after the mover filed a notice of withdrawal.
The Speaker of the Assembly confirmed that the withdrawal was due to procedural issues, as the motion needed to be debated and forwarded to the Senate within 10 days of notice.
As a result, the related court case was nullified.
