The government has introduced a new police unit known as the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) to bolster the execution of its operations.
Unveiled on Friday, January 24, the NGAPU will operate under the Administration Police Service (APS) and has been established to assist chiefs in carrying out government duties across the country.
The unit aims to enhance security, streamline operations, and improve service delivery at various levels of administration.
NGAPU will be headquartered in Nairobi, with branches extending to regional, county, sub-county, divisional, and locational levels, ensuring comprehensive coverage nationwide.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that 6,000 police officers have already been deployed to NGAPU.
This translates to approximately two officers per chief, considering the 3,950 chiefs and 9,043 assistant chiefs across the country.
A draft proposal highlights that NGAPU’s primary role will be to support National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) in maintaining security and managing operations within their respective jurisdictions.
The unit has been tasked with a broad range of duties aimed at assisting NGAOs. Key responsibilities include maintaining law and order, providing protective security for government offices and facilities,
and enforcing national policies and laws. The unit will also play a significant role in tackling high-risk issues such as land disputes, regulatory enforcement, and campaigns against the abuse of alcohol and drugs.
In addition to these duties, NGAPU officers will provide security at public gatherings such as barazas, assist in the arrest of suspects, and ensure proper handling of exhibits during investigations.
Their responsibilities will also include supporting NGAOs in conflict resolution, peacebuilding efforts, and offering coordinated responses to complex security incidents in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.
The government emphasized that NGAPU will help safeguard public safety by ensuring compliance with national directives, protecting against security threats, and enforcing lawful orders issued by authorities.
According to CS Murkomen, the new unit will strengthen the capacity of NGAOs to deliver critical government services while enhancing multi-agency collaboration and improving public safety across the country.
“NGAPU will provide the much-needed security capacity for NGAOs to deliver services effectively, maintain peace, and ensure the safety of citizens,” he stated.
The launch of NGAPU demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving administrative efficiency and addressing security challenges, especially in areas requiring heightened vigilance and intervention.
