Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua recently welcomed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to her residence in Gichugu, located in Murang’a County. The meeting took place on Saturday, January 25, with Gachagua accompanied by his wife, Dorcas Rigathi.
A video shared by Nairobi Leo captured the moment Karua warmly received her guests. Although the leaders did not disclose the purpose of their meeting at the time of publication, political analysts have speculated that the encounter may be a step towards aligning strategies for future political developments, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This meeting follows Karua’s earlier hints about her openness to collaborate with Gachagua, despite their political and ideological differences.
Speaking during a televised interview on December 23, 2024, Karua stated that she was willing to work with leaders who share her vision of opposing President William Ruto’s administration. However, she clarified that there had been no formal discussions about forming an alliance.
Karua admitted to having been previously upset by Gachagua’s actions while he held office, though she emphasized that they are not enemies.
“I have not spoken to Gachagua, nor has he reached out to me, but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of talking to him. He is not my enemy. Kenya has a bigger problem—our common adversary is William Ruto and his regime. Just because we haven’t talked doesn’t make him an enemy,” Karua remarked.
She added, “Yes, some of his actions in the past irritated or upset me, but that’s part of life. Relationships can be mended, though at the moment, we are not in communication.”
In the past, Karua was among the leaders who heavily criticized Gachagua for his remarks and behavior during his time in government.
Meanwhile, Gachagua has been engaging various leaders at his home in Nyeri County, reportedly exploring potential political formations to counter President Ruto’s influence.
Observers note, however, that Gachagua’s political future faces a significant hurdle, as the Kenyan Constitution bars impeached leaders from holding public office, whether elective or appointive.
Last December, Gachagua hinted at supporting Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the presidency in the 2027 elections. This statement added a new twist to the ongoing political maneuvering as leaders across the country position themselves for the next electoral cycle.
