A devastating midair collision took place on January 29, 2025, involving an American Airlines passenger plane and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The crash occurred around 9 p.m. EST (5:00 a.m. local time), as American Airlines Flight 5342, a Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft carrying 64 people (60 passengers and four crew members), was nearing the airport after departing from Wichita, Kansas.

At the same time, the Black Hawk helicopter, which was on a training mission with three soldiers onboard, was operating nearby.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the two aircraft collided midair, and tragically, the passenger plane crashed into the Potomac River.

Newly surfaced videos captured the moment of the crash, while audio from air traffic control revealed that the helicopter, flying under the call sign PAT25, was asked if it could see the passenger jet before the collision.

Search and Rescue Efforts

An immediate and extensive search and rescue operation was launched following the crash. Approximately 300 personnel from various agencies were dispatched to comb through the icy waters of the Potomac River.

Fireboats were deployed to assist in the recovery efforts, and inflatable rescue boats were launched from various points along the river.

As of Thursday morning, authorities confirmed the recovery of at least 18 bodies, though no survivors have been found.

Law enforcement sources reported that the wreckage of both aircraft is fragmented and submerged under the river’s surface.

The cold weather conditions are making the search even more challenging, raising concerns for additional victims who are still missing.

In the wake of the crash, all operations at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were suspended, halting both departures and arrivals, as the incident caused significant disruption.

Reactions and Statements

President Donald Trump expressed his condolences on social media, stating that he had been briefed about the tragic accident. He remarked that early assessments suggest preventable factors may have contributed to the crash.

Trump pointed out that the weather was clear, and the aircraft’s lights were visible, raising questions as to why the helicopter did not take evasive action or why air traffic control did not intervene more decisively.

In addition to President Trump’s statement, Kenya’s President William Ruto also sent his condolences to the victims’ families.

He expressed deep sorrow, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the terrible air accident in Washington, D.C. May the Almighty give strength to the families, President Donald Trump, and the people of the United States of America during this difficult time.”

This tragic incident is now being considered one of the most significant aviation disasters in recent years. It brings to the forefront serious concerns about air traffic safety protocols, particularly in one of the most heavily monitored airspaces in the United States.
