Angry Uhuru Kenyatta Defends Rigathi Gachagua, Warns Jubilee Leaders and Government Critics
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has strongly come out in defense of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, warning Jubilee Party officials and government critics against continuously attacking him.
Speaking passionately during a Jubilee grassroots meeting held in Murang’a on Friday afternoon, the former Head of State expressed deep frustration over what he termed as “shameful and divisive politics” being practiced by a section of his own party members.
Uhuru said he was disappointed to see leaders within the party engaging in insults instead of focusing on uniting and strengthening the movement.
Uhuru cautioned that such behavior would not be tolerated under his leadership. He urged party officials and supporters to share their political opinions with dignity and mutual respect rather than resorting to name-calling and social media insults.
“In all honesty, it pains me to see people on social media claiming to defend Jubilee by attacking leaders like Rigathi Gachagua and others,” Uhuru said firmly. “I don’t want that nonsense in my party. People should do their politics respectfully and focus on building, not breaking.”
He went on to issue a stern warning to those engaging in online insults, saying that such conduct could lead to disciplinary action, including expulsion from the party.
“Some of these people are senior party officials, and before I hand over this party, I want to make it clear — if they continue with that kind of behavior, I will not hesitate to call them out and send them packing. I don’t want to hear that again,” Uhuru declared.
In a particularly pointed moment, Uhuru singled out Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, cautioning him against leading a campaign of verbal attacks targeting Gachagua.
The former President advised Kioni and other officials to focus on spreading the party’s vision and recruiting new members, instead of wasting time attacking political opponents.
He emphasized that political maturity is about engaging in issue-based politics, not personal insults. “Let us sell our agenda to the people, let us talk about what Jubilee stands for, and let us attract new members through positive politics,” he said.
During the same meeting, Uhuru also showed strong support for former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, praising his leadership record and hinting at backing his presidential ambitions. Uhuru described Matiang’i as a disciplined, capable, and results-oriented leader whose past performance speaks for itself.
“I have worked closely with Fred Matiang’i. He is not only a dedicated public servant but also a leader with great potential. My support for him is not personal; it is because of what he has done for this country,” Uhuru stated.
The remarks from the former President come barely a month after Jeremiah Kioni accused Gachagua of allegedly intimidating Fred Matiang’i and trying to push him out of Jubilee.
Speaking during a media interview in September, Kioni claimed that Gachagua was secretly working with President William Ruto’s administration to weaken the opposition and gain influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kioni went as far as branding Gachagua a “mole” within the opposition, an accusation that has sparked heated political exchanges in recent weeks.
However, Uhuru’s latest defense of Gachagua now signals a shift, urging Jubilee leaders to stop internal fights and focus on rebuilding the party.
Uhuru’s strong warning is widely seen as an attempt to restore unity within the once-powerful Jubilee Party, which has faced deep divisions since losing power in 2022.
His remarks also underline his desire to maintain discipline and decency in political discourse, calling for respect among leaders regardless of political alignment.
