Former LSK President Nelson Havi Joins Gachagua’s DCP Ahead of 2027 Elections
Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has officially joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), a political party associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, marking a significant political development as early preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to take shape.
Havi formalised his entry into the party on Wednesday, February 4, after he was photographed together with Gachagua at the DCP party offices located in Lavington, Nairobi.
The senior lawyer was seen wearing party-branded attire, signalling his full commitment to the new political outfit and confirming speculation that he was aligning himself with Gachagua’s growing political movement.
In a statement released shortly after the meeting, Gachagua welcomed Havi into the party, describing him as a strong and respected legal mind whose presence would add value to the party’s leadership and policy direction.
According to Gachagua, the DCP aims to attract professionals who can contribute to strengthening legislation, representation, and accountability in government.
He noted that Havi’s experience in legal practice and public leadership would play an important role as the party seeks to expand its national influence.
Gachagua further stated that the party requires individuals with strong legal expertise to help guide legislative processes and oversight responsibilities, adding that he was pleased to welcome Havi as he prepares to pursue the Westlands parliamentary seat.
He described Havi as one of the country’s notable legal figures and expressed confidence that his entry into the party would strengthen DCP’s political base, particularly in Nairobi.
Havi had earlier hinted at his political shift during a burial ceremony held in Murang’a County on Saturday, January 3, 2026, for the mother of MP James Gakuya.
Speaking during the emotional event, the lawyer openly expressed his loyalty to Gachagua, suggesting that he was ready to follow the former Deputy President’s political direction.
His remarks at the time were widely interpreted as a sign of an imminent political reunion between the two leaders.
During his speech at the burial, Havi recalled their past political cooperation while campaigning to bring the current administration into power.
He acknowledged the role played by leaders such as MP Gakuya during that period and emphasized that he would continue supporting Gachagua’s political path moving forward.
His comments reinforced the perception that he was preparing to join Gachagua’s new political formation.
Havi’s move to DCP comes several months after he officially resigned from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the party he joined in 2021.
He submitted his resignation on November 7, 2024, through a letter addressed to UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar, with a copy sent to the Registrar of Political Parties, John Cox Lorionokou.
In the letter, Havi cited provisions under Section 14 of the Political Parties Act but did not publicly explain the reasons behind his decision to leave the party.
The former LSK president had initially joined UDA after being welcomed by then-Deputy President William Ruto, but his political ambitions suffered a setback in the 2022 general election when he unsuccessfully contested for the Westlands parliamentary seat.
Despite that loss, Havi has remained active in political discussions and appears determined to make another attempt in the upcoming 2027 elections.
His renewed bid for the Westlands seat could gain momentum depending on developments within the constituency. Current Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, who is affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), is reportedly considering a run for the Bungoma gubernatorial position.
If this happens, the seat could become vacant, opening the door for new contenders, including Havi.
Political observers believe that Havi’s decision to join DCP could strengthen Gachagua’s political influence within Nairobi County, especially as parties begin early mobilisation ahead of the next general elections.
His legal background and public profile are expected to boost the party’s visibility and strengthen its efforts to build a strong parliamentary presence.
Notably, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who also serves as ODM’s Secretary General, was present at the Murang’a burial where Havi first made his political declaration.
The gathering brought together leaders from different political backgrounds, highlighting the shifting alliances and emerging political realignments that are likely to shape Kenya’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
