The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has invited recent Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education graduates to apply for placement into 126 different courses offered in its campuses across the country.
Applications are being processed through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), and interested students have until May 6 to submit their applications.
In a statement released to the media on April 30, KMTC Chief Executive Officer Dr Kelly Oluoch said the institution has expanded its list of programmes to create more learning opportunities for students with different KCSE grades.
He explained that the college wants to make medical education more accessible while also ensuring graduates are well prepared for jobs both in Kenya and abroad.
According to Dr Oluoch, students who scored grades such as C- and C can still find suitable programmes depending on their qualifications.
He noted that the college offers certificate courses, diploma programmes, higher diploma studies, as well as upgrading courses for those wishing to advance their education. This means many students who may think their grades limit them still have an opportunity to train in the medical field.
The 126 programmes available cover a wide range of professional areas. Under the Clinical Sciences faculty, students can pursue studies in clinical medicine, emergency medical technician training, and orthopaedic trauma medicine. These courses are designed to prepare learners for hands-on roles in hospitals and emergency healthcare services.
The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences also offers several opportunities, including diploma and higher diploma courses in pharmacy. Students who choose this field can gain the skills required to work in pharmacies, hospitals, and other healthcare institutions that deal with medicine management and patient care.
Other faculties available at KMTC include Public Health Sciences, which focuses on training health workers to prevent disease outbreaks, promote community health, and respond to public health emergencies.
There is also the Information Technology and Medical Education faculty, where students are trained in areas such as medical records management and healthcare data systems.
The Diagnostic Sciences faculty offers programmes in medical laboratory sciences, medical imaging sciences, and optometry. These areas are important in diagnosing diseases, carrying out tests, and supporting doctors with accurate medical information.
KMTC’s Nursing Sciences faculty remains the largest in terms of student enrolment. It offers certificate, diploma, and higher diploma qualifications, making nursing one of the most popular career choices at the institution.
Nursing graduates continue to play a major role in hospitals, clinics, and health centres across the country.
Dr Oluoch said the demand for KMTC graduates remains high both locally and internationally. He revealed that more than 85 percent of Kenya’s middle-level healthcare workforce comes from KMTC, showing the important role the institution plays in strengthening the country’s health sector.
He also noted that KMTC’s global opportunities have increased significantly. Last year alone, the college processed 4,084 graduates for jobs in foreign countries. Among them were 84 occupational therapy and physiotherapy graduates who secured placements in Germany.
To help students prepare for overseas opportunities, KMTC has introduced language training in French, German, Arabic, and Amharic. The college also provides lessons in medical entrepreneurship so graduates can create their own opportunities in the healthcare industry.
For students interested in working in United States and Canada, KMTC has made the process easier by securing local access to the NCLEX-RN Examination. This means nursing graduates can now sit for the important licensing exam in Nairobi instead of travelling abroad.
The CEO added that KMTC has structured many of its courses to take the shortest possible time while remaining relevant to current job market needs.
This allows graduates to complete their studies faster and enter employment sooner. He also said the college has partnered with other institutions to help connect graduates directly with potential employers.
In addition, KMTC has worked closely with the Kenya National Qualifications Authority to align many of its higher diploma qualifications with degree-level standards
This move is expected to improve career mobility, increase employability, and allow graduates to continue with advanced studies in their chosen professions.
