Kenya Met Warns of Increased Rainfall Intensity Across Several Counties Including Nairobi Over Next 24 Hours
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather advisory warning that several parts of the country will experience increased rainfall intensity within the next 24 hours.
The alert indicates that rainfall will continue across many regions, with some areas expected to receive heavier showers, especially in the Highlands both west and east of the Rift Valley.
According to the forecast, the period under observation runs from Sunday, May 3 at 9 pm to Monday, May 4 at 9 pm.
During this time, weather conditions are expected to remain highly active, with thunderstorms and showers developing in different parts of the country at various times of the day and night.
Highlands West of the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin
In the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, as well as the Lake Victoria Basin and surrounding areas, residents should expect widespread showers and thunderstorms.
KMD noted that during the night, many places in these regions will experience rainfall activity, with thunderstorms developing in some locations.
The morning is expected to start with mainly sunny intervals in some areas, although a few places may still record light rain. As the day progresses into the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase again, affecting several parts of the region.
The counties likely to be affected in this zone include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, and Narok. These areas are advised to stay alert due to possible changes in weather conditions, including sudden heavy rainfall.
Highlands East of the Rift Valley Including Nairobi
In the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, weather conditions are also expected to remain unsettled. Tonight, several areas may experience a few showers, although rainfall may not be uniform across all counties.
The affected counties in this region include Nairobi, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, and Nyandarua. Nairobi County is also included in the forecast, meaning residents of the capital should prepare for occasional showers during the night.
Tomorrow morning is expected to begin with cloudy skies mixed with sunny intervals. However, some places may still experience light rainfall early in the day. By the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in several areas, continuing the pattern of unstable weather.
Northwestern Region (Turkana and Samburu)
In northwestern Kenya, which includes Turkana and Samburu counties, partly cloudy conditions are expected in many areas. Samburu County may experience showers in a few locations during the night.
The morning is likely to be mainly sunny, with clearer conditions compared to other regions. However, as the afternoon approaches, there remains a chance of scattered showers in some places.
The Kenya Met also warned that strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (about 12.5 meters per second) are expected in parts of Turkana County. These strong winds may affect outdoor activities and transportation in open areas.
Northeastern Kenya
In northeastern counties including Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, and Isiolo, partly cloudy skies are expected during the night. A few places may also experience light showers.
In the morning, some areas could still receive rainfall, but conditions are expected to improve later in the day with sunny intervals becoming more common in the afternoon.
Strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots are also expected in parts of Marsabit, Garissa, and Isiolo counties. These winds may reduce visibility in some areas and affect movement, especially in open and dry regions.
Southeastern Lowlands
The southeastern lowlands, which include Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta, and Kajiado counties, are also expected to experience mixed weather conditions.
Tonight, partly cloudy skies with chances of showers are expected in several areas. Tomorrow, the region is likely to experience sunny intervals for much of the day, although isolated showers may still occur in some locations.
KMD further warned that strong southerly winds exceeding 25 knots (about 12.5 m/s) are expected in parts of Makueni, Kitui, and Taita Taveta counties. These winds may influence weather patterns and could make conditions feel drier or dustier in open areas.
Coastal Region
Along the coastal region, residents should expect showers in a few places during the night. The same pattern is expected to continue into the morning, with light to moderate rainfall in some areas.
In the afternoon, showers are also likely to occur in scattered locations. Overall, the coastal region will continue to experience humid and unstable weather conditions during this period.
General Outlook
Overall, the Kenya Meteorological Department is advising residents across the country to remain alert due to the possibility of sudden rainfall increases, thunderstorms, and strong winds in various regions.
