Majority Leader in the National Assembly, Kimani Ichung’wah, has criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s recent actions to board a commercial flight to Mombasa as mere theatrics.
Gachagua surprised many when he opted to fly to Mombasa on a Kenya Airways flight, a move that sparked widespread discussion among Kenyans.
Gachagua arrived in the coastal city on Tuesday evening, June 11, to attend the Kenya Medical Association’s Scientific Conference as the guest of honor.
His decision to travel unaccompanied by security and carrying his own luggage led to speculation among the public, with many suggesting that there might be internal strife within the government.
Responding to the public display, Ichung’wah, who is also the MP for Kikuyu, argued that Gachagua’s actions were an attempt to garner sympathy amidst ongoing tensions with President William Ruto.
“Deputy President Gachagua’s stunt is a ploy to undermine President Ruto and push for a larger share of government power. However, neither the President, the Government of Kenya, nor the Parliament will tolerate such antics. No amount of sympathy-seeking photos, local language station campaigns, or social media mercenaries will secure billions of shillings to satisfy anyone’s insatiable hunger for power and wealth,” Ichung’wah posted in his X account.
Gachagua has been advocating for unity within the Mount Kenya region and for a review of the national revenue allocation system to benefit his fellow residents, citing their significant population.
However, his calls have been met with resistance, including from the President, who views his stance as tribalistic and reminiscent of outdated, divisive politics.
The Deputy President’s trip to Mombasa via a Kenya Airways commercial flight was reportedly in response to restrictions on his use of military helicopters, which he had previously favored for travel.
