EACC disclosed that the outcome of the investigation will determine the next steps, including prosecuting suspects and recovering any lost funds.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched an investigation over an alleged embezzlement of Sh1.2 billion by eight senior officials from Garissa County.

In a statement on Wednesday, June 12, EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi noted that the officials were alleged to be directly or indirectly trading with the county government through their own firms or those owned by their close family members.

“Following increasing media inquiries, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) confirms that on Tuesday, 11th June, 2024, the commission conducted a successful investigative operation targeting eight senior officials of Garissa County Government currently under investigation for alleged massive corruption through conflict of interest and embezzlement of public funds in excess of Sh1.2 billion,” Ngumbi stated.

He added that the investigation was undertaken pursuant to court orders targeting senior officials of the county government, their proxies and companies associated with them, which were used to embezzle funds from the county.

Ngumbi disclosed that the operation on Tuesday yielded valuable evidence that will be used to support the ongoing investigations.

He further intimated that the outcome of the investigation will determine the next steps, including prosecuting suspects and recovering any lost funds.

Ngumbi called Garissa locals who may have evidence that may assist the investigations to relay the information through the anonymous reporting system on the EACC website, https://eacc.go.ke/.

They can also use the toll free number 1551 or report to any EACC offices countrywide.

“Any information received will be treated in confidence and only be used to further the investigation,” the EACC spokesman added.
